The tragedy & humiliation of trying to publish #OA for us folks in lower-mid income countries: ๐ง๐ท's Kowaltowski "emailed journal 12 times asking for a discount ... #Elsevier threatened Kowaltowski with legal action if she didnโt pay the quoted fee." ๐๐ฝ https://t.co/OLmLcHt0iB

The @iBEER_LAB is growing! Welcome to the team Katie! During the next couple of years, @KatieMWatson_ will lead our #seagrass #restoration program, implementing assisted gene flow for genetic rescue of seagrass populations in #HongKong and the region! Stay tuned!
Life update! Iโve moved across the world to join the @iBEER_LAB in Hong Kong as a postdoc! Already getting stuck into some restoration with @wwfhk & @nature_org! ๐ฑ

It constantly baffles me how people who are smart, curious and observant can be so blind to simple realities of their profession (and this is not a US thing - indeed itโs worse in most other places). You can not like it - I certainly donโt - but how is any of this a surprise?
I was reading 2023 Nobel laureate Katalin Kariko's book, Breaking Through. She was brutally honest about the academic system in US. And, here is an example section from her book.
