In Portland, Oregon, activists, policy-makers and engineers are working to prevent "the next Fukushima" — an oil spill on par with Deepwater Horizon that's projected to occur if tanks aren't brought up to code. My latest for @highcountrynews
hcn.org
As oil and gas operations at Portland’s CEI Hub grow, so do the chances of a catastrophic spill.

Until reporting this piece, I was wary of DEET myself and would opt for natural repellants. After speaking with two toxicologists, I'm now fully on board with DEET as the most effective, safest way to prevent insect-borne illness (and itchy bites!).

My first article for @nytimeswell covers DEET — an insect repellent that seems to repel many would-be users as much as it does mosquitoes.

Some worry that this active ingredient is toxic. Here’s what we know about its effect on human health.

Canary Butte Landfill in Corvallis is starting to attract the attention of State and Federal officials, who want to address the landfill's numerous violations of environmental policy. For @CanaryMediaInc, I interviewed @SenJeffMerkley on this issue.

Coffin Butte Landfill, which is located in Benton County, might expand soon. The site draws waste from nearly two dozen Oregon counties and accepts more than one million tons of garbage annually. But...

Landfills emit a cocktail of gases, including climate-warming methane, toxic vinyl chloride, benzene and more. For my first @CanaryMediaInc article, I travelled to rural Benton County to see how this pollution impacts daily life.

Numerous safety violations have been detected at the fast-growing landfill. It’s part of a larger pattern of problems with how the U.S. handles waste.

First real wildfire-y satellite image of the summer. The Salt Creek Fire in southern Oregon looks like the real deal, and so does the Shelly down in NorCal. Doesn't bode well for smoke down south and it's just (check notes) July 8. We haven't even had thunderstorm hits yet.

The 2021 heat dome was a "once in 1,000-year event." This one isn't predicted to be as bad, but having it occur at all, just three years later, is terrifying.
"I think this is an event that will be remembered." An extreme and long-lasting heat dome is forecast to hit Oregon, spiking temperatures near 110 degrees and lasting a week or more. I wrote about how bad it'll get and where you can escape the heat: https://t.co/6jBhE970vC

is a species invasive if environmental destruction forces it to migrate? the question is getting trickier to answer as climate change reshuffles species worldwide. @IsobelWhitcomb with a vital story and a gorgeous ode to barred owls for @AtmosMag: https://t.co/g61o2GrNty

My new essay for @AtmosMag is my love letter for barred owls. In it, I grapple with the tension between the desire to preserve biodiversity and the reality of living on a dynamic planet that's changing faster than ever due to human-caused climate change https://t.co/BG8PBj7TB4
