Renewable energy may be America’s last chance to bring these aluminum smelters and jobs back to remain competitive on the global stage.

While the president’s new tariffs are intended to bolster domestic aluminum manufacturing, we are doubtful that they alone can bring these smelters back. What if we invested in cheaper, renewable energy and had smelters running on hydro, wind, or solar power?

Primary, or raw, aluminum smelters once formed the foundation for families and towns across America, but now, there are only four still operating in the country. And the soaring electricity costs that shut down Magnitude 7 pose a huge challenge to bringing them back.
