Regardless of what you think about whether those on the list should be allowed to come here, or whether the £7 billion is reasonable. It is very hard to understand the justification for the secrecy - especially so long. Or why no-one has been fired for the original error.

This Afghan superinjunction debacle will surely strengthen Reform's hand. Immigration, cover-ups, massive spending, no-one apparently fired or held accountable. Plays into the feeling that both parties are as bad as each other - and the 'system' in cahoots with them too.

All in all, a must read for anyone with even the faintest love of history. And a perfect gift for any small people in your life - children, nephews and nieces, godchildren and the like.

An an Austrian, there's more on Central European history than we typically get in Britain (and less on the US). Defenestration of Prague and Diet of Worms here we come!

With 40 chapters in 280 pages, the humanity and love of history oozes from every paragraph. The style is full of narrative and aimed at children. See below for the start of the chapter on the Greek/Persian wars - I read this to my kids (11 and 7) last night and they were rapt.

Written in 1935 by a Viennese art historian. Banned by Hitler for being 'too pacifist'. Mildly updated and translated into English by the author, aged 92, in the 1990s. I've just discovered Gombrich's A Little History of the World - and it's glorious. 🧵

And to read the full report - which argues the UK should follow the example of the Netherlands and gradually transition to a social insurance-based model of healthcare while maintaining universal coverage - see here:.

Great piece by @JohnRentoul on @Policy_Exchange's latest report on reforming the health care system. It is always pleasing when our foreword authors are compared favourably to Martin Luther.
