You know how we urge you to not crowd the plow? Yyyyyeaaahhhh. This driver passed one of our trucks and ended up caught in the middle of a tandem plowing operation.

service. (1/2)
We are strongly discouraging anyone from traveling during this storm but if you absolutely have to be out, do yourself a favor by not passing our plows. Conditions are going to be much worse in front of the plow.
We want to assure the public that there are no issues with the Milwaukee Avenue bridge over the Kennedy Expressway, just south of North Avenue. The bridge columns were designed to be at the angles shown here and have been this way since it was built in 1958.
🎉Congratulations🎉 to Omer Osman! After 31 years at the Illinois Department of Transportation, he has been confirmed as Illinois Transportation Secretary, the 13th to lead the agency since it was created in 1972.
THE BRIDGE IS OVER: It was a cold and windy morning, but we managed to take down the old Illinois 178 bridge over the Illinois River at Utica. No steamed hams were harmed during filming.

No crashes at this time, but SB and NB I55 between mm 63 and 82, the same stretch as yesterday, are being closed by IDOT, ISP due to high winds and low visibility. Signs will be posted and detours in place. Updates here when available.
Thank you,

Here comes Round 2. Much of the northern half of Illinois is expecting everything but the kitchen sink: Snow, sleet, freezing rain and slush will make a mess of the afternoon commute. Expect a long, slow trip home. Our crews are out, but please consider leaving early if you can.
As expected, temperatures are dropping. Even areas that have been pretreated or cleared can still be dangerous.
If you *must* travel, slow down and eliminate all distractions so you can focus on the road. Also, please don’t hit our snow plows? 🙏

The

Midwest states are continuing a robust testing program with the Siemens Venture railcars starting today on Lincoln Service trains 303 and 306. We expect the new cars to go into revenue service in the first quarter of 2022.
We are urging folks to stay home if possible the next two days but if you have to travel, be sure to check for the latest road conditions.

Conditions are deteriorating in the northern half of the state, as this view of a snowy Interstate 80 at I-57 in southern Cook County shows.
Our teams are working hard to clear roads, so please give them plenty of room. Road conditions as of 4:45 pm via .
A snowplow's job is never done. If they’re not seen clearing roads, they’re busy clearing shoulders to give motorists a safe place to pull over in case of an emergency. Please reduce your speed and give them space to work when you see them.

It's still snowing, you guys. But our crews are still out there, getting those roads cleared. As always, give them plenty of room.

That's a whole lot of magenta ahead of the morning commute. Again, staying home is the safest option if it is available to you.
Our crews have been out working hard since late last night, but the snow is too heavy in some areas to be able to keep up.
IDOT is thrilled to announce the reconstruction and modernization of the Jane Byrne Interchange is a finalist for America’s Transportation Awards, a top honor for state departments of transportation.
Accumulating snow is expected across the entire state later this week. We don't yet know the exact timing or amounts yet, so take this time to double-check your emergency travel kit.
For the second year, IDOT is adjusting its mowing practices to help create more habitat for birds as well as food for pollinator species like the monarch butterflies, Illinois' state insect:
Winter, meet IDOT. The first official day of winter is today and it’s coming in hot. This scene in our Riverton Yard from today is playing out all across the state as the trifecta of snow, cold and wind is heading our way.
We did it, Illinois! We're at a full reopening, and we'd like to thank

Our essential workers kept Illinois moving during the pandemic. Show your thanks by slowing down and giving them room to work.
Lots of uncertainty for final totals, but suffice it to say that a large swath of Illinois could see serious snowfall starting Tuesday night into Thursday.
Wrap up your to-do list early as it's likely to get dicey. Check for the latest conditions.
We've added a new layer to the Getting Around Illinois map! In addition to winter road conditions and construction updates, we've made it easier for you to avoid the dozen or so Packers fans that make life unbearable year-round.
Illinois 185, between Hillsboro and Coffeen, is currently closed due to a sinkhole. The sinkhole has slightly increased in diameter, making the area unsafe for travel. Until further notice, IL 185 will remain closed while a geotechnical consultant evaluates the situation.

The latest from ISP: Interstate 55 remains closed in both directions between Raymond and Divernon (exits 63 and 80). Visibility remains poor because of high winds blowing dust about.
IDOT and ISP will continue to provide updated information as we get it.

The storm heading our way is going to bring us the whole winter enchilada: rain, wintry mix, snow, strong winds and bitter cold. Those winds could bring significant blowing and drifting starting Friday, while the cold can limit the effectiveness of our plowing operations.
You can now bring your cat or dog (but no snakes) on a train!
@Amtrak
has announced that it will welcome pets on the Lincoln Service and Texas Eagle trains.
If you could just go ahead and stay home, that'd be great mmmkay?
The bitter cold and wind still rule the day, with blowing snow creating hazardous conditions at times. Check for the latest.

While some local agencies, out of an abundance of caution, have made a decision to suspend plowing for the night, IDOT is still focused on continuing snow removal operations during the overnight hours.
We've received two reports just in the past 15 minutes of motorists hitting our plows. Please — and we cannot stress this enough — give our drivers room to do their jobs.

IDOT crews all over the state are preparing to hit the road just like this.
We ask that you *please* stay home if at all possible. More cars on the roads means less room for our plows to work.

Cook County: Two expressways are closed in both directions because of flooding:
◼️ Stevenson (I-55) is closed at Pulaski Road
◼️ Eisenhower (I-290) is closed at Des Plaines Avenue
Massac County: Both lanes of eastbound Interstate 24 are blocked at milepost 30, near Big Bay for a semi hauling beer that is on fire. Let us have a moment of silence for our thirsty brothers and sisters.

Tonight is NOT a good time to be out, especially on rural north-south routes. Plowing, salting only does so much in these conditions. Expect heavy blowing and drifting, poor visibility, extremely slick and slow travel. Always ask yourself: Is this trip really worth it?
