This arm belongs to my cousin and he is pictured making his 100th #blooddonation earlier today. I received multiple transfusions during my time on #ECMO, which was beset by bleeding complications so I have many reasons to be grateful and proud of this achievement. #blooddonor

My handwritten notes provide a unique real-time perspective of my ICU experience, while I was in the grip of #delirium. I expressed my fears to my partner by telling her, “I'm frightened” and the impact this had upon her can be seen in the response, “This upset me very much.”
“She would lie in her bed really quietly. but she always had this frightened look on her face and when her family came to visit . they told us that . she felt really scared because she was seeing someone in the room with her.”. #Delirium.

The format of the book may not appeal to everyone but I enjoy comic art. Beautifully paced and illustrated, with much I recognise in my own #delirium experience and each time I read it, I am led down a different path of reflection. The author describes her #ICU event wonderfully.
In May 2013, Zara Slattery's persistent sore throat turned into a deadly bacterial infection, leading to a 15-day drug-induced coma, which she describes as 'being trapped in a nightmare state that you can't wake up from'. A graphic memoir.

I had a dreadful time with #delirium, driven by auditory and visual hallucinations. It is evidenced repeatedly through my real-time handwritten responses, from when I was unable to communicate verbally, that were saved and incorporated in my #ICUdiary (
Direct yet gentle questioning on hallucinations for people with #delirium:. "Have you noticed anything odd recently, like seeing unusual or unexpected things?"

My written response to a senior nurse at @GHFT_DCC when asked that very question:. #delirium #ICUdiary
In #delirium, patients rarely volunteer that they are hallucinating. Here's one useful way of asking about hallucinations:. "Have you recently experienced anything strange, like visions or voices that seem very real but others don't notice?"

Fantastic!.Seeing my bed-space and the layout of the unit, provided an additional layer to my psychological healing that complemented my #ICUdiary. Transitioning to reality - the diary of an ARDS survivor: #PICS #PTSD #delirium #ICUdiary.
Thrilled to have secured funding to deliver our "ICU Virtual Tour" to help patients and families make sense of their experience after discharge. Watch this space for more. A huge thank you to @AdelaideHealthF for funding this worthy project 🙏.

A vital service for ICU patients that should be accessible for all. The psychological recovery is every bit as hard as the physical recovery and often longer lasting. #PICS #delirium #PTSD #ICUdiary.
Our Critical Care Psychology team presenting an overview of the service, now four years young in @TUH_Tallaght. Hundreds of critically ill patients have recieved support during and/or following their illness, with families and staff supported also. @TUH_Psychology #IHPG2025

In the days following my release from four-weeks of sedation, my partner made the following note in my #ICUdiary:. “I think Dave is confused.”. #delirium
Families usually know before clinicians: "Dad is not usually confused." . Yets staff still are inconsistent in using the word "delirium". If we as professionals can't get it right, we are failing families - there is no other way of describing this. #delirium

Return visits to ICU @GHFT_DCC (GRH) and @glenfield_aicu, were a big part of my psychological healing and provided an added layer to my #ICUdiary (.However, it should be approached with caution because it does have the potential to re-traumatise. #delirium.
A patient returned for an ICU visit recently; struggling w/memories of #delirium. Met a nurse who provided care. Didn't remember her until. she took his hand. Memories of her holding his hand, "the warmth", came flooding back. Compassionate care matters. #ICUDelirium #Nursing.

Fifteen years after my ICU event (H1N1-ARDS), the residual issue that continues to impact me the most on a daily basis is my short-term memory. I can trace the source back to the post-coma #delirium period, through the written communications that were incorporated in my #ICUdiary
For many, #delirium has a long shadow. E.g. cognitive dysfunction may persist long after discharge:. 40% have new /worsened cognitive impairment at 3 months. 25% show effects at 1 year. Many never return to baseline. ➡️ Always consider the need for follow-up.

It dismays me to hear flu trivialised as “Just the flu”. There is no 'just' about it when you are fighting for every breath in the ICU.
I sometimes hear the comment “It’s just the flu”. Please remember that influenza like other viral illness can have devastating consequences for people; resulting in serious illness, hospitalisation, long-term complications and sometimes death. Let’s not trivialise any illness.

The precipitating cause of my ICU event was flu (H1N1), that also put me on #ECMO at @glenfield_aicu so I echo Dr Sampson's call. Below, I am promoting the flu vaccine for an ARDS Foundation campaign back in 2017. The diary of an ARDS survivor:
Influenza cases rising rapidly in the UK. If you’ve been considering getting your ‘flu vaccine this year but haven’t quite got around to it yet, now would be an excellent time. BW.An ICU & ECMO doctor.
