The record-setting Hondo, Texas hailstone fell at about 120mph. At 569 grams (or 1.25 pounds), it had an impact energy around 3800 joules which is 158 times the energy of a 2-inch hailstone. #hail #science #TXwx

Hondo, Texas now tops the IBHS list of largest hailstone scanned. @rossmanbrm12 scanned the hailstone that fell last Wednesday at 6.4" in diameter. Now, a committee will review to determine where this hailstone stacks up in state history. Thanks @NWSSanAntonio for coordinating!
