Big fan of this hanging (in the @V_and_A) embroidered by nuns in Heiningen, Germany in 1516. It’s a great example of a nun’s theological and classical education on the eve of the Reformation. The name of the prioress ‘D[omi]na Elisabet’ and 58 nuns are embroidered on the piece

Can anyone please tell me what the word at the beginning of the second line is (underlined)? It makes sense for it to say mother but it looks like maccere or mactere to me, neither of which exist/fit. I think I am missing the obvious. #Latin #paleography

Could any art historians or historians of architecture help me interpret this incomplete seventeenth-century image? I’m curious if it resembles a garden plan or if it might be based on direct observation.

Measuring 3 feet by 6 feet, this "monstrous" 17th century world map has lots of fascinating details if you just zoom in and take a look! Zoom in closer here: https://t.co/DbEIap5qbN

I identified this fragment (AM 241 III α fol) this morning: a fragment of the ‘In Natalicio Sancti Olaui Regis et Martyris’ beginning with the (partial) response for the seventh lesson at first vespers. Best feeling ever!

I'm currently photographing SJC MS 82, a 15th c. Book of Hours. It includes this defaced historiated initial of Becket's assassination. If you'd like to read more about Becket in medieval manuscripts, check out this blog post on the SJC Library website: https://t.co/GvNwRSF88Q

My new article is out🔔 I explore traces of Ali Ufki’s humanist training, connecting it to François Rabelais and Antoine Galland, through an analysis of his curious Turkish-French notebook of dialogues. @EarlyModHistory

#MedievalTwitter hive mind: I'm looking for a digital surrogate of the El Escorial a-I-6 codex, a 14th-century copy of the letters of Pope Gregory the Great. Does anyone happen to have a copy?
