This remains one of the best lighting talks, by @vivisky ! A mediocre environment can look great with good lighting, and a detailed environment will look bad with mediocre lighting. Lighting is the biggest "brush" you can use to paint your environment.

Found a couple of old GIFs showing a few of the tricks I'm using for @EuropaGame , nothing fancy but less is more. Scalable floor pieces. Keeps UV's intact for the base layers but top layer scales along with the model, allowing to retain big gradients and reducing instance count.

I should be working on my #UE4 Blueprints scripting, but this is so satisfying. Painting 3 layer masked blended terrain materials, working with a tri-planar material that auto applies itself to slopes for fast results! @EuropaGame

New @PlayOverwatch Control point map out on PTR today, set in Busan, Korea! Each 3 points feature a different distinct theme: City, Temple and MEKA Base. The design of each point should feel very different with varying environment hazards and vertical elements. Go check it out!

3 mat vertex painting, useful to hide seams. (Hard edges are bad in stylized art directions) Same as the floor piece, it has a top layer painted on top of all, allowing each instance to have a "painted on" surface, since AO bakes usually gives you a very "mathematical" look.

Man... the first @dishonored (2012) still has one of the best materials and lighting of any stylized game that I can think of. Not bad for a PS3 game. The consistency of the art direction, from the characters all the way to the textures is spot on.

Shipping a game is always an emotional process, it takes loads of (vfx) blood, sweat and sometimes even tears to see it through the end. I'm so incredibly proud of the @PlayOverwatch team for puling it together and finally releasing OW2! Go check it out for free on all platforms!

This is so dope, an actual reusable spaceplane designed to resupply space stations with misc cargo. Takes me back to when we worked on the OW Gibraltar base map, I tried to sort of imagine a design for what a Space Shuttle 2.0 could look & feel like. You could play around it,

Hand-drawn water animation exported as a vector sequence and then converted into a 3D mesh in Maya. I love this so much, it looks amazing!

For rocks you don't need many assets if you also layer maps. I retain the world scale UV's for the surface texture, and only local scale the NM, Cavity and AO, this rock asset works virtually with any scale. This also pairs well with vertical axis projection to add veg on top.

One thing I want to avoid is a busy read, specially on assets that are far away. For this, I specify a different UV tile value for the surface texture as the camera closes in on the asset, handy to control texel density.

🎨 Quick tip for more pleasant compositions: Clump props together in little pockets instead of placing them randomly or evenly throughout an environment. Will help make things look more natural and easier to read. Excerpt from "Environment Art Mastery"

Man this was great, they recreated the spawn room of Route 66 irl at blizzcon. You can order food and drinks there too. Loved the attention to detail and respect to our source material. The set dressing, props and textures, including the floor decals are the same as the map. :D

Game artists, think Y axis being up is weird? Try explaining someone why uv1 is actually uv0, or why inverting the green channel is actually correct normal orientation. Or even better, why the roughness is white for full rough, and black for full smooth.

#MaxPayne turned 20 years, a couple months after it released I started making maps with it's built in editor, MaxEd. As a impressionable teen this game basically launched my career and my love for environment storytelling in games and I couldn't be more thankful to @remedygames

Found an old video (~2019) trying to figure out a Z facing blob shadow for @EuropaGame Blob shadow is a trick platformers use to make platforming a little easier, helps players get a better sense of depth. Ps. This is a very early version of the level from the demo.

@timsoret Yeap, we were able to achieve a level of optimization on our internal Overwatch engine that would be very hard to do on Unity/UE. This is another reason why I hope the industry still keeps developing inhouse engines where it makes sense.
