Proper handcrafted parallax w/ thousands of individual elements looks like this. 2017. Today, it's 10x larger and even more intricate. I'm no "lazy AI shill". I have it on good authority how immense of a labor it is to draw & animate an entire 2.5D open world game by hand.

It's the laziest kind of parallax you could ever go for, as it doesn't require:.- to animate a camera.- to manually isolate layers.- to paint behind them to avoid disocclusion artifacts.- to use projection mapping.

The idea of parallax layers is a technical limitation. Today, each sprite can and should have its own parallax coefficient. Here's one of my work 10 years ago. Rushed in a day or two. It was for the official website of "A Monster in Paris" soundtrack, and we got an @fwa award.

About this reply. First, "pixel depth mask" isn't a thing. Those using this expression are outing themselves. It's a displacement shader based on a depth map. It DOES NOT WORK with pixel art and it's.- full of disocclusion artifacts.- wobbly & jittery.

Here's another example. I dedicated 10 years of my life to next-gen pixel art, pioneering many techniques that became widely popular among indie games. I can tell you that literally no human has ever produced something like this in pixel art before AI. None.

"It's not new". What's the difference with when I created The Last Night's blend of 2.5D pixel art + physically based rendering?. It's a new recipe, made with classic ingredients. If you consider my game innovative, then this is too.

Or we could just go mass billboard & swap sprites with distance, but that would lock the art for this perspective & prevent smooth turns (but not Myst-like turns!). Overall, this style would work perfectly for a mobile game, and it's surprising nobody has thought of this before.

As to feasability, it would require a splat-based rendererer like the one seen in Dreams or the new vegetation LOD system in Unreal Engine, with many, many clever tricks to achieve the retro look. Years of work imo.
