S. 2287 boosts training & resources to tackle real gaps in palliative care. Too many seriously ill patients don’t get the support they need. Kudos to @SenatorBaldwin for leading this long overdue, practical step toward better care for patients & families.

A sobering piece by @Louise_m_perry: MAiD isn’t about increasing access to dignified suicide—that’s existed as long as we have. Instead, it leads to more suicides overall, especially among the costliest patients. This isn’t compassion; it’s cost-cutting.

In an aging world, assisted suicide may look to governments like a cost-saving measure.

From @kim_fellner, a beautiful reminder that the doctor-patient relationship is a partnership — not always in perfect agreement, but one built on mutual respect. She & her palliative care doctor show how two different people can work together with grace, honesty, and compassion.

👏 Heartened by this statement from @American_Heart encouraging broader integration of palliative care in cardiovascular disease. While our role in heart failure is well known (hopefully), PC has been underutilized in other cardiac conditions. An important & overdue step forward.

I agree with Dr. Dugdale: this bill, though well-intentioned, is deeply flawed. Patients must be screened for depression & psychiatric illness—& seen by palliative care to ensure symptoms are fully managed. Without strong safeguards, vulnerable people may die needlessly.

@SenatorOrtt @AndreaSCousins – As Senate leaders, it’s crucial to consider the Medical Aid in Dying Act carefully. Without palliative care specialists, patients may suffer needlessly and prematurely choose death, unaware of better options. The risk of coercion is also a concern.

NY Assembly passed a flawed medical aid in dying bill—no palliative care consult, no real safeguards against coercion. Patients already have the right to end their lives; doctors shouldn’t be asked to facilitate it without strong protections. @GovKathyHochul, please don’t sign.

Every word of @DrCharlotteG’s piece resonates deeply. We can debate how govt $$ is spent—but the lack of investment in caring for dying patients is unfathomable. When I tell people how little Medicare pays hospices to cover *everything*, they’re stunned. This needs to change.

Beautiful piece in @Guardian about a Danish palliative care unit. "There are three things that are important for someone dying to get the opportunity to say. 'Forgive me. I forgive you. And I love you.'” . @irabyock, someone’s been reading your stuff.

Today we remember Rita Levi-Montalcini on her birthday — a trailblazing neurologist who defied fascism, sexism, and exile to uncover the secrets of the brain. From a hidden lab in her bedroom to a Nobel Prize, her legacy is one of courage, brilliance, and resilience. 🧠💪.

Cancer cachexia in palliative care. A Thread 🧵 . The term Cachexia originates from the Greek words Kakos and Hexis and translates to “bad physical state”. It is estimated to be the direct cause of death in up to 20% of cancer patients.

Last summer, I received an intriguing tip. I heard the largest health care union in the U.S. — 1199SEIU — had spent over $60,000 on travel and lodging for the union president's daughter to accompany him on business trips as his caregiver. Thread incoming. 🧵.

👏 Kudos to @YNHH & @MHBeasleyMD for launching a palliative heart failure clinic! Palliative can be a hard sell at first, but patients quickly see there’s no downside—just better quality of life. Hoping more hospitals follow suit, not just for HF but for all serious illnesses.
