Halo: Combat Evolved wasn’t just great because of its level design, enemies, music, or story. It felt free. You could push boundaries, explore, and discover things the devs didn’t hold your hand through. Most games back then told you “you can’t go there.” Halo said “try me.”

A few of us at Bungie had an unspoken rule about Halo cinematics: Never make the player in the cinematic feel more "badass" than the actual game. We don't want players thinking "I wish that's how the game actually felt". Cinematics should serve the gameplay, not compete w it.

Old school Master Chief was a power fantasy. Doomguy, Kratos, Rambo levels of badass. Now he’s brooding, emotional, and keeps getting tossed around. Maybe some like that, but I played Halo to be unstoppable, not to watch him cry over Cortana again.

Take the Spirit dropship, for example. Fingers crossed a lot of what we saw in that demo is just placeholder, because I really don’t want another Halo Anniversary situation.
