I do not like this one so well. All he does is yell, yell, yell. I will not have this one about. When he comes in I put him out.

Why is everyone arguing about a tree I don't see one? Did Halo "fans" really gaslight themselves into creating a tree and and then started arguing over it?

The original intent behind the discussion of sprint was to show that you -could- add new mechanics to Halo, given resources to make the proper trade-offs. In this thread, I will critique IGN's "remake" of my Twitter thread (which is really nothing more than a "remaster" at best.)

I have transcended! My authority is being used to refute an anonymous source who is also me! Leftists hate me because I think they are insane and would side with the Flood. Rightist hate me because I don’t think we should promote ICE with a vehicle-mounted .50 cal! Grummz hates

I can't believe some people are taking this as an ENDORSEMENT. Like I really think we should vaporize our civilization to stop illegal immigration. Badgers. Phonebooth.

Spoke to early Halo devs about the ICE post One called it "abhorrent” Another: "Using Halo imagery in a call to ‘destroy’ people because of their immigration status goes way too far,and ought to offend every Halo fan, regardless of political orientation” https://t.co/HSSTD6ieM3

Any real Halo fan knows that the only way to "Destroy the Flood" is by vaporizing your entire civilization along with all sentient life in the area.

(Sprinting in multiplayer has a whole slew of other negative consequences that are a lot harder to account for, which probably makes it a net negative in objective-based multiplayer.)

So, in conclusion, if you have the time and resources to properly minimize the negative consequences and account for tuning issues, especially how it breaks combat and pacing, adding sprint is probably a net positive trade-off.

- Sprinting makes vehicles less useful and important. I have seen playtests where players complete an entire vehicle mission on foot because sprint makes it less obvious they are doing the wrong thing. But the firepower, team capacity and other benefits should keep them useful.

- Sprinting breaks mission pacing and the sense of exploring a mysterious environment. If all your missions are locked down already, this is probably a fatal issue. The downstream effects would be catastrophic. But if you are early enough in development you can probably

- Sprinting lets players skip combat and trivialize enemy encounters. Ok, this issue is too big to ignore. Before adding sprint we have to address it. Is there a way we can ameliorate this negative trade-off? Maybe sprinting drains your shield. Or it makes so much noise that all

+ Sprint allows players to get where they want to go in less time. This is why they want it. They are impatient and for some reason the game is not holding their attention at the “normal” speed. Usually because they are back-tracking or they’ve played before or they can see there

The definitive answer to this question, and -every- game design question, is “Only if you can build the mechanic such that the trade-off is net positive.” So let’s look at the trade-offs and do some analysis.

Enough already! Given that game mechanics are not atomic, imply trade-offs and should not be options, just answer the question! “Add sprint or not?!”

Ship your MVP fast But fast doesn’t mean sloppy. An MVP should be minimal, not mediocre. How do you decide when your product is ready enough to launch?

In some rare cases, a decision with trade-off consequences does need to be an option. Difficulty Level, for instance. But because mechanics are not atomic — every mechanic influences all the others like gravitational attraction — in those cases you have to be willing to re-tune

(Sidebar: You have also sacrificed your artistic integrity and given up authorship. When you watch Star Wars it doesn’t ask you, the audience, if Han is a rogue who would shoot first or a Boy Scout that would only shoot in self-defense. Make a choice!)
