I have a lot of people asking me about what we’re doing in our assisted living homes to help elderly people become healthier.
So I decided to put together an email list with updates on what we’re doing and how you can help your elderly loved one.
There’s also a checklist of
During Covid we had a different philosophy when the disease ran through our assisted living homes.
Instead of locking everyone in their rooms 24/7, we brought them out for at least 45 minutes to an hour of sun every day sprinkled through the day.
Results were mostly mild colds.
Fascinating to me that serving nutritious meals, getting out in sunshine and fresh air and exercise goes against CDC guidance according to the former Surgeon General of the U.S.
Fascinating to me that someone would actually brag about not following CDC and public health guidance for outbreak management - especially for vulnerable nursing home patients- and not think it creates a legal liability. I hope if anyone’s family member is harmed from a covid
Back in May we started our assisted living resident Melissa on a journey to restore her memory.
We gave her a cognitive impairment test called SLUMS to baseline her. She scored a 15/30. Well within the range saying she had Dementia.
Then we fed her a

I would like to clarify my comments. We didn’t ‘do nothing’.
We followed our infection control plan. We just didn’t think that masks and isolation would help in our home. A few people put on masks because that was their choice.
I apologize for any confusion.

What’s truly remarkable is seeing the complete lack of empathy and compassion for me and my mom (in a nursing home) in the replies below- from people who complain we didn’t have enough empathy and compassion for nursing home patients and their families throughout the pandemic. 🤦🏽♂️

Barely able to walk in October.
200lbs lighter and walking around the block today!
The carnivore diet is doing amazing things in our assisted living homes!
Residents are starting to walk again.
Blood sugars are way down.
Energy levels rising.
@JakeKaneMD
My family didn’t do any of that. Stopped wearing masks about a month into it, no vaccinations and eat inside all the time because we living in Arizona and it’s summer. We’re going on a family vacation in August.
Can I send you a postcard to cheer you up?

She said they used to charge $2/check.

I’ve been impressed with a new personal trainer I’ve been trying out with our assisted living residents.

Actually I spend a whole lot of money each month on high quality food, special cooks and a personal trainer that helps the residents exercise.
It’s a lot more expensive than buying masks and isolating people in their rooms.
I had a gentleman tour my assisted living home for his Mom today.
It was obvious he spent a lot of time in the gym.
While we were talking he casually mentioned he has Multiple Sclerosis and has had it for 4 years!
I couldn’t believe it. He looked like he was in incredible
We have been notified by a Hospice company that another one of our residents has become too healthy to qualify for Hospice any more.
I love it when that happens!

@JeromeAdamsMD
No. Neither can Jerome Adams since his Mom caught Covid as well. Masks and isolation won’t change any long-term issues with Covid.
This may sound weird but my favorite part of assisted living is when someone no longer needs our services.
Our resident Melissa has done such an amazing job of healing herself. Today I dropped her off at the airport to go home and start her new life.
It was sad to say goodbye
Just finished a phone call with a new PA we brought in for one of our assisted living residents.
The resident was previously on 54 medications. We wanted to reduce that number needless to say.
After the phone call, her exam and some labs we brought it down to 29 medications.
I’m finding the exact opposite of this article in my assisted living homes.
Nobody is becoming overweight on the high-fat diet we feed our residents. Many of our residents are thrilled by the weight LOSS they are experiencing!

Great day yesterday.
Two of my managers told me we have one resident coming off Hospice.
Another two residents may be ‘graduating’ from Hospice soon.
This always makes my day!
Our cooks are starting to make videos of the low carb meals they make for our residents in case you’re interested.
Since fat fuels the brain, you’ll see an emphasis on it in the meals but still a bunch of protein.
Got the call at 6:30 this morning that one of our caregivers is sick at one of our assisted living homes.
Due to vacations we don’t have an alternate.
So I get to play caregiver today. The joys of maintaining a 24/7 schedule!

So I was going through the medication lists of some of my assisted living residents. I think we have a new record.

I asked my manager about it. He said the doctors don’t want to take them off any of the meds.

The father of a lady I know is in the hospital.

I showed another assisted living homeowner one of my homes yesterday.
He was surprised how active everyone was.

The other day we had a lady move into one of our homes.
She was not happy about it all. She thought her family was just “dumping” her in our home.

We just lost a resident that had been in our assisted living home for 8 years.
It was like losing a family member. Losing residents is by far the worst part of this business. You really get close to these people.

I’m so excited about pushing it more in my assisted living homes!
Since my wife and I have turned more to the

Which, she pointed out, has made me the main cook in the home.
Pretty sneaky of her!
Tonight’s meal.
We recently took a friend’s Dad to a Naturopath since his regular doctors weren’t making him better.
Among other things the Naturopath recommended 10,000 IUs a day of Vitamin D.
When his regular doctor heard that he told my friends Dad:
“That much Vitamin D could kill you!”
I tell families when they tour my assisted living homes:

Recently one of my assisted living residents asked if she could attend Lutheran church services.
So I went to a local church and talked to the Pastor. He told me he would personally pick her up and bring her to Mass on Sundays!

Can confirm. Nobody in our assisted living homes who eats the low carb diets has had a decline in kidney function.
In several cases we’ve seen improvement. Even in stage 3 kidney disease.
I get asked the “is keto or carnivore ok for kidneys?” All the time.
The idea that protein is hard on the kidneys is a myth.
These are just some of the kidney health testimonies I have received that would fit on one slide.

The headline says this woman died from eating too much protein.
When you read the article it says she was eating a lot of protein powders and supplements.
Stick to animal protein sources.
Things get interesting when the assisted living business owner works a shift as caregiver.

Best wishes for 2024!
Diabetics in our assisted living homes aren’t asking the caregivers if they can have some extra meat.
They do, however, ask the caregivers, family members, and anyone else who comes into the home for sweets, sugary desserts and ice cream.
Some also demand cereal.

Please don’t take this the wrong way but with your acceptance of all their pronouncements, it will never end. It ends when we take power away from them and tell them “This Stops Now”.
I feel for this guy. It’s not just individual food addiction.
Some families of residents in my assisted living homes feel they are being nice to their loved one by bringing over treats.
Not only that, but they question me if I say I would rather they didn’t share the treats

I’ve been having a lot of people reach out to me lately telling me how much they hate the healthcare industry.
It’s really sad to see an industry that should be doing so much good has so many dissatisfied customers.
“A study in Italy found that symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease can be transferred to young rats via the gut microbiota of Alzheimer’s patients.”
Your gut holds the key to so many health conditions. That’s why what you eat is so important.
