Curious about changing your relationship with a substance?

also, AI is not -free- and no one with those services is gonna just keep giving it away. There are so many costs, monetary and other, and if you aren't paying them yet, you will get blindsided when they come.
Had a really great convo about how accountability without ownership is the pathway to burn out...Executive leadership measuring your perf, holding you accountable for your scope but not allowing for full ownership on decision-making.
It resonated so hard for me and I just😳
Today is my last day at the
@nodejs
Foundation.
I'm -very- excited to dive back into challenges in the project just as a contributor(I'm not going anywhere!) and to continue to help remove barriers for collaborators as well as new folks who want to learn and use Node.js.
@TaelurAlexis
I have had to advise some startups to absolutely NOT do this in the hiring/not-hiring process. It's gross, and the whispernetworks make sure it's known.
No, startup, it is not a compliment to be asked to contribute to your codebase as an alternative to being hired.
Oh hi conf friends!
It's that fresh time of year when so many good confs are announcing their 2018 dates. Organize? Attend? Share the dates and CfP details here!
Howdy!
Hiring for a Full-stack Dev in NYC to work on a small founding team(w/ me!) funded by
@SamsungNEXT
, w/ a passion for web communities & OSS. We empower web devs with ethical machine learning tools.
DM me for deets!
(also now I need to find out if we're dog friendly😍)
I keep thinking how I've been arguing for a seat at the table(for me and others), but in recent years found once I get there I want to make new tables because the people at the existing tables suuuuuuuck.
I am grateful I'm in an industry where my work is in high enough demand that employers don't hold all the chips.
We keep track of employers failing at being good employers. When you fire someone, often there's been a lot of failing above that person.
WE SEE YOU. We share it.
As a white woman, I present as very comfortable and non-threatening to police. It is my responsibility to learn how to protect others who do not have that same privilege. If you're lucky enough to share in a similar privilege, here's one thing you can do:
Burnout wreaks havoc on relationships, too, y'all.
You not protecting(or being able to protect) yourself w work spills over to life. It's not always your choice. But it's a hellofalot cleanup on the flipside, which you won't have energy for.

This isn't how conference organizing works. If you only had one not-dude applicant, that means the program committee and organizers failed. I've run 10+ conferences and sat on many more program committees. It's your responsibility to make that number different.
Every time I think my life has hit a new level of 'wow, can I handle this?'– I hit a new boss level, y'all.
I don't talk about those complicated things very much here. Just know, we all struggle with shit.
This week, I'm peak struggle.
🌇 NYC is soooo pretty rolling into Fall. Interested in hanging with us as a really delightful community of web developers gathers again?

Please PLEASE consider that when you write Medium posts, thinkpieces ,and make business decisions this year using the

Growing up in the South, I think I love summer thunderstorms way too much 🤗
Been opening my door and listening to it while working as they've hit each day this week here in NYC.
If you think that a diverse team can't succeed because they may 'struggle to gel' and you're the one who hired them–it means you're a shitty manager and you've got a long way to go in the professional skills department and you don't deserve that team.
Caring too much
will wear you out.
Don't stop caring!
Just maybe take some breaks. And don't give away your cares to shitty people.
Save 'em up in your cares piggy bank for the lovely people you cross paths with.

Oh hi friends of OSS and distributed online teams...
What would you like to walk away from a talk about conflict management in OSS knowing? 🤔🤹💪🙏🤟

Oooooooo their whiteness is showing.
Guess you can really care about fair wage but only when your employees aren't ruffling any feathers caring about whether people live or die thanks to "politics".
Folks I respect most and am drawn to in this world bring an energy of light and kindness in what they do. They seek to impact the world with persistence of this. Small daily interactions. Or really big pushes at your company in spite of the inertia of the status quo or ignorance.
Oh hi!
Planning my 2018 conf talk travel. Thanks to continuing better self-care it will be a small list.
If you'd like me to consider talking at your event about OSS community building & diplomacy(conflict mgmt, organizing, education, inclusivity, human motivations)–DM me! 🙏
Reminder to overambitious folks who can do MANY things!:
Just because you can, doesn't mean you -need- to or -owe- anyone anything.
I've found myself at the point where I'm doing so many things and have been for so many years without exiting ...

don't retweet this garbage into my timeline. Do your reading, do your homework. Watch the videos and look at the pictures of what these places look like and what we're doing by moving these folks to military bases. There's no need to repeat history.
Oh hi, white friends.
Don't be that person. The minute you get uncomfortable, especially really viscerally feeling it and wanting to respond and ask or worse, get comforted---bite that tongue. Listen. Read.
A skill we don't value enough: NOT answering a❓when you have nothing to add. You don't always need to speak.
I hired & lead advisors for 60 startups. You know what we didn't do when they'd ask a question?
Respond w/:
-oh, it depends! (and nothing else)
-condescension
You can do what is right. Or you can do what is easier -right- now.
We all pay the cost. In our personal lives, in our foundations, in open source. We all get to work that much harder to fix things down the road, when one person, or a small group, make that easy decision.
@engineering_bae
I once had a researcher tell me he'd never seen the drama that he's seen of tech twitter anywhere else so well documented(because thanks online) and easily accessible, and said it seemed unique even of Twitter communities. He wanted to do a project on it. 😅
As a programmer, I'm here to tell you that I am not an expert in the field of [X], and I am now going to comment hot takes on how [X] should have been executed since I'm an observer and don't have all the context,
Time for a 🧵👇! (1/37)
Y'all. I have discovered that people I absolutely consider friends and have known for 5+ years... I legit only am able to contact through Twitter DMs. Others via Slack. Or Insta DMs.
What is wrong with me and my absolute allergy to using basic text messaging or phone calls 😅
I know the struggles of running conferences(for no profit). Your speakers MAKE your conference. They provide the content and help set the tone for the experience that makes your event sing.
Pay for your speakers' tickets(DUH). Pay for their travel. You are taking their time.
Weighing whether I actually care about a thing(to continue to work on it) and also think some people don't deserve the work I contribute has been a big part of the last few years for me.
Time is precious and I want to be focused on things I love, for life and work.
Action packed week of hanging with the

Grateful for no lines this morning. Embarrassed and angry at all the voter suppression and harassment stories I'm hearing across the country. Caught myself saying, "that isn't American!", but then was reminded that's not true. It's part of our history.
Vote. They are scared.
Oh hi anyone-with-direct-reports(managers, directors, c-levels),
Your role is to enable those who are collaborating to progress your mission. You help with professional development by lifting them up–you lift yourself and your cause. You remove barriers so they can speed ahead.
Here's the thing...when we tell you that people are shitty/exploitative/racist/sexist, and we have years of receipts, and you continue to work -directly- with them, explicitly endorse them(work, conference, projects, etc)...
We remember. We take notes. You go on the list.
See you there,

for starters, but I know there are countless articles out there because I've read them and given guidance on some.
I'm pretty over people and organizations that are unwilling to reflect and iterate. Be deliberate. That's just as fitting for relationships as it is for workplaces. I guess I'm finally holding my life accountable to my higher expectations?
Raise the bar. Then hold fast to it.
I've been privy to the organizing of many web community confs, this is unfortunately not unique.
There's a white-knight personality that is drawn to this organizing work–the faux ally, and inevitably exploits communities to stroke their egos.
Thank you,
@ladyleet
, for sharing.
NgAtlanta and NodeAtlanta - the "other sides" of the story.
I'm appalled by the way the cancellation of these two conferences were handled, and how they are still being handled.
I don't speak up on everything, but I could not stay silent any longer.
Update: I maybe did not fully think through that this last year has been
- 😬pregnancy w/6 day labor + caesarean
- pandemic
- my entire team laid off without me knowing
- fun court times in adopting a 5yo
- failed coup
- hard but 💪 CFO Board work
- research mode for startup
Example: I'm finally going to use
@Pocket
after being the Queen of
#toomanytabs
for a decade, because using tabs as news, research, and a task manager is too much with how many hats I wear. Will help minimize distractions. I didn't have focus problems as much pre-kids.
I feel like a super undervalued & underestimated skill of a founder is their ability to discern between good and garbage advice, from the million people who will offer it to you every step of the way.
Looking at how great open source-ish projects/products manage contributor expectations and context dissemination--

's 'design-decisions' repo is a pretty cool idea. Small wins!

The organizers & attendees are all so invested in building for tomorrow and they -get it-. Undeniable the incredible work they are do to make our global programming ecosystem kinder and smarter. 😘
I was reminded today that my parents used to list my only medical condition on school forms as 'ornery'**.
Turns out I spent all of that time in the corner for being stubborn building up valuable LinkedIn endorsementable skills in 'persistence' 😬😅✌🏼
This week, I have somehow came across -multiple- photos of past Tracy aggressively eating waffles.
I guess I'm more Leslie Knope than I thought. I ain't mad at it.
Today in reflection, I remembered that every opportunity I've had in my adult life that helped me move up, required me to break the rules or question the premise entirely. 'Normal' job leveling/titling structures goes for this in particular, and is absolutely why I move jobs.
Today, I am grateful that I can have
@levainbakery
delivered to my door within 20 minutes of the desire to eat my feelings. 😊😬✌️
Y'all take care of yourselves this week.
We intentionally keep
@EmpireJS
small in attendance for repeated, meaningful interactions. Doesn't make things easier on us. It's worth reconciling the money we need to gather in order to invest in our ecosystem. To offer opportunity scholarships for awesome 1st time attendees.
Proud of myself for only being angry for 5 minutes(then moved on) when I was reminded of the Paula principle & when a woman leaves her job her gap is filled by multiple roles...It's 🙃 to be reminded that the vision you sold for years was finally accepted, after you leave.
