Literally BAFFLED as to how people found love before dating sites and social media. Was settling the norm? Or did everyone just happen to be romantically compatible with the person sitting nearest to them in class?
I asked my rabbi how he and his wife met: He spotted her by chance while visiting her college, asked around to get her name, then years later saw her name listed in the apartment building he had just moved into in a different state! Ran into her on the train & introduced himself.

I understand the mechanics of it. What seems unlikely is finding someone with the right combination of traits, values, etc., who happens to feel the same way about you. Online dating gives you access to way more people and the ability to filter those who meet your criteria.
@la_smartine
I mean, I do and have done that all my life but it's never led to finding romance for me. And it doesn't for a lot of people. Luck plays a big role there.
Tonight over Zoom my seven year old step-niece proved that 2+2 = 4 by holding up two fingers in each hand and counting the total. So I think that settles it?
@East_of_Dulwich
I'm not sure we mean the same thing by "settling." In my mind, it means accepting a partner who doesn't fully meet your needs. Not settling doesn't mean you've exhausted an infinite supply or that you've found someone who satisfies every want; it means your needs are met.
@bigal_0
Right, I understand how one meets others IRL. My question is how so many people seem to find the right match for them through these chance encounters vs through an online database tailored to your criteria.
Would you rather discover, upon death, that individuality is an illusion and we are all part of a universal awareness; or that your individuality is fundamental?
Having read through Twitter's rules, I cannot find a prohibition on using the C word or any other profanity in the context of quoting someone, even though this appears to be why they suspended Gator's account. Either point to this rule or reinstate his account, please.
I think many are missing the humor in my hyperbole. Obviously many people find genuine romantic connection offline. But such serendipity requires luck, whereas finding someone on a website specifically designed to connect a large pool of singles drastically increases your odds.
In the Netflix adaptation of The Three Body Problem, a lab is defunded because its experimental physics results are puzzling. But wouldn't unexpected results be valuable and thus reason to fund more experiments? Can someone explain the logic here?
I'd like to share my gratitude for
@drrollergator
, the best math teacher I've ever had. He takes the time to answer my (often confusedly worded) questions with compassion and exceptionally clear explanations. Thanks to Gator, I feel empowered in math for the first time.
(To pin): Hi! I produce musical content on YouTube, from philosophy songs to remixes to jazz arrangements. If you like what I create and have the means, I would be honored to accept your patronage. It's no pressure, but I figured I'd post a link.
@briandavidearp
It's a faith-based system, like other religions. Is it any more ridiculous than my believing that all Jewish souls were present at Mt Sinai? No. And at least astrologers aren't making laws that restrict my reproductive freedom.
@wtgowers
THIS IS BRILLIANT! (It took me some time to work through it using my notes from Prof. Hamkins' lecture as I'm not proficient in math.) I'm so honored you would take the time to compose this! Are you okay with my making this into a song and obviously crediting you as the lyricist?
So yeah, is it a coincidence that Ben Burgis and Jordan Peterson were each invited onto Rogan shortly after appearing in my videos? 🤔 I have the power...who is next
Did Asimov include in his first law some calculus to assess risk which only prompts the robot to intervene when the human's risk-taking reaches a certain threshold? Otherwise, how do his robots permit humans to leave their homes or do anything involving risk?

If I get pregnant with the intent to carry the fetus to term, and at some point during my pregnancy I no longer consent to being pregnant (there are a million nuanced scenarios here which republicans seem incapable of understanding), I am not obligated to continue being pregnant.
This was the first philosophy book I read and boy am I glad for that. It's a demystifying and concise read for all lovers of learning.

If I go to give blood and decide last minute I don't want to, even if a FULLY FORMED human will die otherwise, I have no obligation to give blood. I own my body.

The question of when human life begins is philosophical. Does an embryo have the same rights as an infant? What about unused embryos in IVF therapy? Your own philosophy here shouldn't restrict a woman's freedom to choose what happens to her body.
@instamfordhill
He handled this incredibly well! He stayed calm, did not match her hostility. We can all learn from him. Also, my favorite part: "Enjoy your coffee." "IT'S NOT COFFEE, IT'S TEA!"
This might be a hot take but I consider my Americanized-Sephardic pronunciation of Hebrew an authentic accent. This is how Hebrew was spoken in my childhood synagogue and at home, and is consistent with how many other American Jews speak Hebrew.
New song: ODE TO HIPPASUS: a musical proof of the square root of two's irrationality!

If I consent to having sex when I'm in the living room, and then after entering the bedroom I no longer consent, I am not obligated to have sex. I own my body.

Under no circumstances does a woman/girl have an obligation to risk her life (pregnancy is a health risk in 100% of cases) to support a fetus. Having consented to becoming pregnant at one point is irrelevant, for obvious reasons...
