Okay. I’m really over the moon to share: I’ve accepted a job @ Oxford, Senior Research Fellow in Moral Psychology & Practical Ethics, starting sometime fall. It’s my dreamiest dream job, and I couldn’t be happier. Thank you to all my friends, family, mentors for lifting me up. ❤️
Has anyone noticed a correlation between people who use phrases “the science says” or “follow the science” and, not being very good at science (scientific reasoning, critical evaluation of evidence etc.) but, rather, being more inclined to parrot ‘authoritative’ pronouncements?
From Sexual Revolution by Laurie Penny. I don’t know how much ‘straight boy’ accurately describes my childhood self, but must confess that I, too, do not recall experiencing anything remotely like this (mostly, premarital sex meant going to hell; certainly not an entitlement)
The study (which I conducted w colleagues) showed that female participants only (not “people”) rated a ‘boy’ as experiencing more pain than a ‘girl’ despite identical pain display. We did not measure credibility judgements & they cannot be directly inferred from the data
From
@NYTOpinion
: Studies suggest people see women as less credible than men when reporting symptoms of pain, and new research from Yale shows how early this bias begins
People seem interested in how a small group of researchers with an agenda can 'rig' a "systematic review" in medicine to make it say whatever they want, albeit dressed up in objective-sounding rhetoric. Here is a follow-up for those who want to see the details of how it is done.
Some recent bad news notwithstanding, I am happy to share some really good news: as of a few days ago, my dissertation corrections were approved (having passed my defense last month), so I'm officially Dr. Earp 💜. It's been a very long road. When I started the PhD I was at an 1/
From gender bias to media bias? A thread on how our study looking at adult perceptions of children's pain got misconstrued. A reminder of the importance of taking media coverage with a grain of salt, reading original studies when possible, and guarding against confirmation bias.
Hi folks. Twitter has been taking a toll on my mental health. The lack of charity & demeaning way of interacting that are so normalized even among peers make it hard to continue. I've tried to raise a voice for ethics & integrity in science, but I need to step away. Love & peace
Here is a little window into how the medical literature can get biased by controversial opinions disguised as 'systematic reviews' for anyone interested. I'll walk you through an example. Take this highly cited review article in the flagship

Deeply confused. It is the foreskin that has stood test of evo time (millions of years; exists in all mammals, male & female); circ has existed only some thousands of years (male & female cutting same length of time); must be *forced on children* to persist as social practice
And to the extent that sexual feelings or desires weren’t just repressed or associated with shame, I would say that connotations of gentleness, exploration, awe - almost unworthiness - and mutuality would have been the prevailing themes or attitudes I had toward sex
What if we all just decided to use Twitter differently, at least in our little community of academics? To drop the snark, put-downs, point-scoring, lack of charity, etc., & willingly set a good example for the rest of the site? What’s stopping us? Why not choose radical kindness?
I have a hypothesis about what might contribute to *moral outrage* being such a big thing on social media. Imagine I’m sitting in a room of 30 people & I make a dramatic statement about how outraged I am about X. And say 5 people cheer in response (analogous to liking or RT). But
1 of hardest things 4 me as young academic in recent yrs: seeing many senior scholars publicly model lack of charity in representing & responding 2 views of those they disagree w: the vilification, shunning, sarcasm, dunking, tribalism, etc. from ppl I look up to = heartbreaking
I just want to follow up on this shocking conflict of interest case at
@WHO
, where the inventor of a newborn circumcision device, after applying for a patent, is invited to co-write the
@WHO
"manual" for performing newborn circumcision, touting his own device for mass use.
Wow.
@WHO
claims 2 have 'voluntary' medical male circumcision (VMMC) program, based on data from studies of sexually active *adults* - but now pushes non-voluntary circ of infants, for which there is no controlled evidence of a protective effect against HIV. Plot thickens ...
Really bothers me how ‘science’ has become some sort of political thing you’re supposed to blindly ‘follow’ or ‘believe in’ - rather than, say, acknowledge as flawed (often biased) human activity that must tirelessly be subjected to most stringent evaluations & careful critiques
One of the most disorienting experiences is when someone you know and trust and love shows themselves capable of real coldness or cruelty. It shakes the foundations of one’s sense of the world
OK here is my take on the 'grievance studies hoax.' I think it shows that generally poorly reasoned, largely unfalsifiable papers with apparently absurd conclusions can get published in top journals in critical-studies-type fields. Fair enough. But it does NOT show a special ...
Folks, I think I’ll step away from twitter for a while. The norms of accepted discourse even among academics seem to allow for a degree of meanspiritedness, mockery, point scoring, snideness, etc it’s taken its toll. I’ve met a lot of really kind people on here. Wish you all well
OK folks, time for another thread. This doctor,
@DrChaya
, is apparently running for Senate against
@SenatorCollins
(). I was copied into a thread where someone had drawn a comparison between female & male genital cutting, which
@DrChaya
, like most people,
I don’t understand why some people are conservative and others are progressive. Shouldn’t we all want to conserve the things that are worth conserving and progress on what needs progressing? 🤔
In one week’s time I officially start my first job post-PhD, as Senior Research Fellow in Moral Psychology in the Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Oxford

What if people you strongly disagree with about certain things still might make good points sometimes from which you can learn and what if you yourself don’t have all the answers and what if we treated even very flawed individuals like human beings and what if we are all flawed
Today’s my birthday. It’s been a hard year. I struggle to come to grips with the illness and death of my longtime best friend, Matthew. I wrote down some memories: “Seeing and Forgetting”
To be clear, I was aware that at least some such stereotypes existed, & might be passed down within certain subcultures (e.g., 'frat boy' type environments) but my overwhelming impression was that it would be reprehensible to approach sex in such ways - not something to emulate
I write about gender & sexuality because these are things I’ve long grappled w. personally & writing in philosophy/ethics is a way I’ve found to explore topics I can’t always talk easily/openly about. I hope some people find my writings helpful. I need a break from Twitter, sorry
Well this is a pretty special moment for me. First copy I’ve held in my hands. Some 8 years in the making. Thank you to
@juliansavulescu
for inspiring collaboration and
@stanfordpress
for trusting us and making this real.
Ummm ... I just submitted my first book manuscript. Like, submitted submitted. Like, next time I see it will be at the proofing stage! ☺️ Never thought this day would come.
And because it is so much harder (not to mention time-consuming) to get a proper rebuttal of such biased reviews into the same flagship journals that initially published them, you get an "asymmetry of bullshit" situation as noted here (credit:
@ziobrando
)
Seeing influential researchers — people I’d looked up to academically — behave on this platform with extreme pettiness, bombast, immaturity, polarized politics, use of ad hominem insults etc, has been one of the very most dispiriting and disenchanting aspects of being on here 💔
Just learned of the untimely death of a dear friend. I am in total shock. I will say more as soon as I know the full situation. That those you cherish may be taken, without warning, is a lesson that cannot be over-learned. Let’s be kind to one another, and love, while we can
My actual job is to read and write and learn and grow and think up questions and work with really smart and interesting people to try to answer them and to imagine a better world and try to help create it. That’s my *job* ... I feel so very fortunate 🙈
The older I get, the more it hurts to see mean-spiritedness, mocking, sarcasm, and the like, no matter who the target. There's enough suffering in the world. Cultivate kindness ... even with people you disagree with.
To anyone out there struggling to sleep tonight, or feeling misunderstood, or like it’s hard to be a person, or wondering how it all fits together, or who’s lost a friend, or misses their mom and dad, or is anxious about finding their way, I’m sending you a friendly hug. 🌟🌟🌟
Simple but important point from Tim Williamson (“Doing Philosophy”); a certain kind of naive relativism - often thought to be a way of ‘respecting other cultures’ — can in fact be a way of denying the possibility that ‘they’ have anything of worth to teach ‘us’ about the world
Every year in the Philippines, young boys are lined up, pinned on tables, overpowered & subjected to what any adult would experience as torture, as part of their penis is cut off while loved ones smile, laugh, and hold their arms down. Horrific abuse
😀Anthony Fauci & Salim Karim jointly awarded John Maddox Prize 2020 for standing up for science. "The judges also commended the work of Brian Earp in the controversial field of child genital cutting for taking a multi-disciplined, science-based approach."

Horrifying recent study assigning half of newborns to "no anesthesia" condition for circumcision. These infants maxed out the pain scale for the entire procedure. This is torture. "A Comparison of Pain Scores in Neonatal Circumcision w or w/o Anesthesia"
Heartbreaking: up to 40% of Filipino boys experience infection (), and up to 70%, PTSD (), from their public circumcision rites each year. I wonder why
@WHO
doesn't view this as a human rights violation? One possibility is that ...
