Great man and great book!
Alexander von Humboldt remains my favourite historical figure. Here is a map of his famous expedition to the Americas. Map source: https://t.co/yksFHUGqTY An extremely good biography about the man (I cannot explain just how good that book is): https://t.co/LD5vRfi0lf

Why indeed.

To build a "date night" type restaurant it wouldn't be unusual to spend $900 per square foot in addition to the cost of a shell building. A really good restaurant margin (just within the 4 walls with no accounting for home office costs) is 20%. A really good return on cost is a

That Banksy is shit. It isn’t even remotely original as it steals wholesale from this image that has been going the rounds of social media for the last few months. He is tired and lame and should have chucked it when he was fresh and interesting.

My first instinct is that Rothko is beautiful. I'm not overriding instinct. It's harder to explain why I find it so beautiful - overriding my learned sense of aesthetics.
Your first instinct is correct btw. This isn’t beautiful, this isn’t a masterpiece. In order for you to think it’s anything of the sort you have to override your innate understanding of beauty and the sublime and try and cognitively brute force yourself into viewing it as

If you want some hope for the future have a look at the proposals to restitch the ancient English town of Newbury. They're probably the best town centre development being proposed in Britain today, quite inspiring: a perfect example of three core concepts....

What would you say if someone told you they were getting just under a million pounds to "tremble" a museum 😵💫 and make it more inclusive towards "Global Majority Artists"? Well, sadly it's not a joke. Read more in @TheCustodian25's latest Substack. https://t.co/xX3m69LRko
This year a lecturer from Trinidad and Tobago bagged a staggering £881,950 from the @BritishAcademy_ for a project entitled “Trembling Abode: Reimagining the Museum as Home for Global Majority Artists”. The pilot museum being "trembled" is the Fitzwilliam in Cambridge. Read more

AWUK Learns that, on Osborne’s prospectus, the British Museum’s entire western range is to close (likely at the end of 2026) and, moreover, will remain closed during building works for significantly longer than the claimed 3 years should his “re-imagining” find funds.

Merci @Alan_Cochrane and @Telegraph The French are right – don’t lend us the Bayeux Tapestry

I got a preview copy. Outstanding book on underrated topic. Really brilliant - brings to life transition from dark ages.
Very excited for today’s publication of The First King of England, and very grateful to @PrincetonUPress and @pew_literary and @doujohyou for all of their support

Mark Rothko suffered his whole life from a visual condition that caused him to paint his squares to be very fuzzy, and bad. But now with AI we can clean them up and see them how he probably imagined them!

The case of the lack of Greek claims for the Parthenon Marbles in the Louvre is even more baffling given that we even have historical proof that the French consul Fauvel took the French pieces illegally. The Greeks prefer to "forget" this little detail, and to go instead after
@EvdoxiaL Greece has long raised the 'issue' of [some] Parthenon Sculptures but never those belonging to EU member France. Why is that? It's because FR is quietly that much more resolute in 'cultural convictions' than the more mealy-mouthed people running the UK. https://t.co/sexBF8Psum

Doing some research into the provenance of Raeburn's Skating Minister, I put into google the address of one of its former owners, Beatrix Scott. She lived in a house in Tattershall. That house is not only for sale, but the current owners have a copy of the picture!

Did you know that 7% of humans, including the woman sitting next to me at Gate E27, are born with a genetic defect that prevents them from understanding that everyone else can hear when they have their phone volume turned way up at the airport?

New development should make old places better, not worse. If it doesn’t, you can hardly blame people for objecting. Make our cities beautiful again. For people, prosperity and planet. 🙋♀️💵 🌎
If you step up in density like this, dont be surprised if your neighbours object and it's the last time you do it
