I've ducked and dived, isolated, vaxed to the max, but it's finally got me. Tested positive this morning. Resting up and hoping for a mild dose. Stay vigilant people, 50 Australians a day are still dying from this.

Slowly returning from my Covid fog, although still quite tired and weak. I was helped by four vaccines. My post Covid advice: Get all the vaxing you can, wear a mask, stay away from groups in enclosed spaces. Don't catch, don't spread, it's a bad bastard.

Ok tweeps settle back for a long thread. The airline industry, including airports, have thumbed their noses at the Disability Discrimination Act and the Transport Standards for 20 years. I've had enough, and my inner lose unit is out of the box.

Against my better judgement tried to book a @Jetstar flight today so could travel with my wife. My travel agent was told that, though there are free seats, there are none for service animals. So we can add service animal apartheid to wheelchair apartheid.

I explained I would sit the dog, be scanned, call her through. She would trigger, I would not, she gets pat down. She loves, I do not. Again refused. I tried once more, and G said guard had turned his back on me. How insulting and disempowering to someone who cannot see.

We put bags and metal on the belt, and walked to the scanner. Male security guard said aggressively you can't come through this lane with the dog. I explained that at GC airport where I live there are only body scanners, and I do it every time I travel - regularly. He refused

Andrew then said only dog to be patted down and we got through. I felt incredibly stressed, humiliated and overwhelmed. G walked to Virgin lounge where staff saw my distress and treated me very well.

G was appalled at my treatment. We decided to give in, and go to the other lane. This made me feel worse, as I knew what was happening to me was discriminatory and unacceptable.

This has happened to me many times before, including being physically pushed backwards in Darwin, and I was completely triggered. I felt more sick in the stomach than I usually do when I go to airports, and my heart rate increased significantly. I was sweating.

So few meet and assist staff that we have inordinately long waits, and are treated as second class citizens. Only two wheelchair users on aan aircraft. Many Many more.

The guard said I had to be patted down, even though I had not triggered scanner. G, who could see, waved over the supervisor called Andrew who asked the guard if I had triggered. Guard said no. If G had not been there I think guards answer would be different.

There were few people in line, but at least ten rows of switchbacks, which my guide dog finds tricky, so we chose the premium lane. We offered those in the line already to go first, but they told us to go ahead. This lane was the only one with a body scanner not an it-ray.

I sat my dog before the x-ray and went through it without setting it off. The whole time the guard, or a different one, was saying I could not come through that way. I called the dog through and she triggered the scanner.

I just cleared security at the Gold Coast Airport. Nothing like the problems I had in Adelaide several weeks ago, but I still had to convince the guard that I would be able to use the body scanner. We have a long way to go on the journey to equality.

Today I attended my last board meeting of the Attitude Foundation. I leave the organisation in good hands, proud of what has been achieved towards changing community attitudes about people with disabilities. There has been progress, but still much to do.

@Graemeinnes @AussieMaryD I have a brain injury. To lessen the noise on a flight I used noise reducing headphones. I explained to the hostess that I could clearly hear and understand her message. My qantas flight was turned around and I was taken off the plane because I was being disruptive.

Guide dogs do a great job, but their health is critical to their good work. Taking my dog to the vet today to receive injections which will minimise the impact of Arthritis. Ouch!

In good breaking news WE WON. Susan Thompson and I were successful, with your support, in having AIRA make Central, Town Hall, Wynyard and Circular Quay access sites. This means that people who are blind or have low vision can dial an agent and get help for free. Video soon.
