@Color I 💗 what I do and thankful a dear friend pioneered the way to get GCs in this place (👋🏾 Lauren)2 B in the convo about what real innovation looks like. Include everyone in ur talks. Spoiler alert: testing thru ur employer (that you DON’T do in front of everyone….TF?) is a PERK.

And then cascade testing isn’t free so that’s a problem? C’mon. Don’t do this. @Color (I’ll name it since you didn’t) does offer a great program for families and we aren’t the only one. You prefer perfect over progress? What a privilege.

The GCs you surveyed (w/ < 4 yrs in the space 😒) said they worried about ppl doing testing as a benefit and being surprised with a ➕result. Cute. Talk to the GCs who hear DAILY how thankful they are to have their employer give them this benefit bc otherwise THEY WOULDNT DO IT.

AND (yeah I’m mad) those with cozy jobs can be international/ underrepresented and taking care of multiple family members! The framing at the conference negates that. Piss poor. So you work- does that mean you have time to go to an office to get testing? NO!.

To say genetic testing thru your employer is unethical and increases disparities bc those who get it are in cozy jobs ERASES 2 THINGS: those who work at those companies are ALSO custodians, cafe workers,admin & EVERYONE in this economy is struggling! Salary does not equal access.

At a conference themed “Leading Beyond the Horizon”, this talk was about something already in place and commonplace. We talk about increasing access to genetic counselors and then complain about how it’s accessed? Nope.

Not gonna lie, after digesting #NSGC24, not liking the term “ghettoization” to explain the concept of a condition being prevalent only among poor ppl as a side effect of gene therapies, ESPECIALLY w/knowing the lived experiences of those with SCD. #genechat.
