Something I wrote just over 6 years ago. While I'd word things differently after 6 years as a Pro scout, the core idea of the piece remains... playing experience has undeniable value that is hard to comprehend for the inexperienced. https://t.co/gPaMVtpcH2

I want to present another possible explanation of what is happening in the baseball world. Baseball has captured the heart and passions of many people, regardless of their own personal skill level.โ€ฆ

The best player at age 12 is rarely the best player at age 17. I canโ€™t emphasize this enough. So much happens between those two snapshots in time.

I'm not saying the metric "isn't right"... I'm saying, why pay attention to it when you have context? Would another guy make the play? We'll never know bc the situation shades all plays. Comparing a ball off the wall to a ball in the grass/green turf is misguided.

@GoGoGolson @TheWARmonger_ Where heโ€™s positioned based on the shift doesnโ€™t change the catch probability (which is based on his position relative to the batted ball profile), your insistence on comparing their shift positioning shows you donโ€™t understand the metric.

Agreed. Some of the best coaches I've ever had never played in the big leagues, and some of the worst I have had, did play in the big leagues. There were not many of those guys. Most big league coaches have a really good feel and understanding of the game and they NEVER forgot

@JLucroy20 With due respect ... Neither is it accurate to say: "Top players understand how 2 play at high level, best of all." Context always matters. Players, coaches, analysts, media, fans, etc., who have played + coached + studied game in-depth have best opp to understand it.well.

I was a can't-miss prospect that did. Had scholarships to Harvard, University of Miami for football and baseball, graduated second in my class. Then life happened. Divorce, alcohol, traded multiple times, getting fired. Sometimes the best thing that happens to you looks like

Experiential fact: Roughly 80% of hitter issues are related to timing or not preparing to swing. Symptoms of this include poor pitch selection, grooved or rushed swing, passiveness or poor barrel placement. Don't start tinkering with mechanics at the first sign of struggle.

I always shake my head when a player under the age of ~16 is labeled โ€œpitcher only.โ€ Youโ€™ll can overlook a lot of late bloomers, under-nurture athleticism, and take a lot of fun out of the game with those two words.

What a lot of these hitting gurus donโ€™t get along with parents is if you teach hit the ball in the air at a young age, by the time they are strong enough to MAYBE see some success with it their playing days will be long gone!

TIMING TALK The SKILL of having good timing of when + where can cover up many swing issues. Just like having great bat to ball skills or zone awareness. It all matters and helps. Itโ€™s not just about if you have a good swing or not. Or how far you can hit it. Be a HITTER

Unwritten rule #8. Stealing signs is OK, just don't get caught. Some books say sign stealing is taboo but it's not. If your signs are easy enuf to steal, it's YOUR fault. If you get caught sign stealing, someone gets hit. If you get caught, it's YOUR fault. Get it?
