Everyone wants to talk about winning. But in politics, the best lessons come from losing and sticking around.

Yesterday was Saint‑Jean‑Baptiste Day. A celebration of Quebec’s identity and heritage. Fitting, then, to remember that in 1833, Montreal added the beaver to its coat of arms to represent the French settlers. “It was a nod to hard work, not heroism.”.

I wrote about the beaver. Not as a mascot, but as a symbol of the country we’re still trying to build. A little sentimental, sure…. but it’s for Canada Day.

Most governments peak in year one. The Carney team has a shot at real legacy but only if they avoid Ottawa’s oldest trap. My latest on Prime Ministers and submarine Captains.

Canada's defence problem isn't about money. It's about delivery. Cabinet needs to demand accountability and performance from the public service, from contractors, and most importantly from themselves. We need a different mindset.

Ottawa doesn’t run on org charts. It runs on people without fancy titles who decide what moves and what stalls. If your file vanished after a “great” meeting, this might be why.

Trump wants to be McKinley. Carney promised to be Uncle Louis. One raised tariffs. The other built Canada. It's Victoria Day Weekend. Read my reflection on the kind of leadership we need now.

Maverick said it's not the plane, it's the pilot. But in 21st century air combat, that's no longer true. It's the network. Why Canada needs to stick with the F-35.

The era of reluctant defence spending is over. Liberals in Canada and Labour in the UK are framing it as economic growth, industrial policy, and resilience. It’s a smart shift—and long overdue. My latest:
