2/2 Today is a time to reflect on Canada’s own past role in the enslavement of Black and Indigenous peoples and to renew our national commitment to truth and reconciliation.

1/2 Emancipation Day commemorates the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, which made slavery illegal throughout the British Empire, including Canada. Thousands of African-Americans subsequently sought freedom in Canada in the 19th century.

Artist James Duncan depicts the original Parliament Building around 1866, 11 years before the completion of the Library’s dome. The completed Victoria Tower can be seen standing magnificently on the south façade.
