Likes: fiction old and new; Lynch; punk rock and its various antecedents/spawn; Stoke City FC, dogs. Dislikes: cucumber. More or less economically inactive.
Just heard David ‘Dave’ Davis on radio 5 saying that Penny Mordaunt is “very popular in Scotland and with young people” and I can’t help thinking this is probably the first Scotland and young people have heard of it.
The joyous Early Doors rewatch continues. The whole cast is remarkable of course but the boy Henshaw is genuinely brilliant. We’re talking Barker/Rossiter performance levels.
Fiery Jack 31.10.08 - 25.11.20
Farewell our handsome, hilarious friend. You never did learn any new tricks. Or indeed any old tricks. The most gloriously disobedient dog I’ve ever had the honour to know. And what a looker. Sleep well lad.
My niece works at a restaurant in Mcr and was recently tipped £40 by one of the Gallagher bros for fetching him a knife & fork as he was struggling with chopsticks. Sadly this otherwise top anecdote is a bit compromised by my sister’s inability to remember if it was Liam or Noel.
That’s twice in 30 minutes I’ve been stuck behind a sampler at the bar. One of these wands who has to taste 5 different beers before he settles on one. Look pal, life is a roulette wheel. You might like it or you might not, just buy a fucking pint.
I passed Charlie Watts once in Knightsbridge and nodded to him in recognition almost before I’d consciously realised who he was. He graciously nodded back. He was dressed immaculately. He walked a few more yards before turning into an antiquarian map shop. It was perfect.
Neil Young wrote Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand one after the other on the same afternoon while he was in bed with the flu. Some days I think I’ve done well if I get round to having a shave.
Two years today since I accidentally took a beautiful photo at Lynton in Devon. I love that sunlight and I promise there’s no filter. The much better half (and Fiery Jack) are on the right lending the thing a bit of Edward Hopper. Shame about the plastic pipe on the left.
What was the first single you bought with your own/pocket money?
It was two months before I doubled my collection with Eddy Grant’s Electric Avenue. Remember how well you KNEW a record? By Christmas I could’ve written Jackie Wilson Said’s track sheet.
Been playing The Stranglers tonight. They were pre-punk, punk and post-punk yet they’ve never been especially welcome in any of those worlds. I expect this little tweet will immediately reverse that.
Spare a thought for Malcolm Owen of the Ruts who died forty years ago today. A life cut tragically short and a career that’s not celebrated nearly enough. Their singles in particular are untouchable. RIP Malcolm.
Born 65 years ago today. The great Mark E Smith. Hopefully this entitles him to free prescriptions or something on whatever celestial plane he inhabits these days. Anyway Merry Smithmas everyone. Keep a little Mark in your heart ❤️
***NEW PLAYER HAS ENTERED GAME***
Say hi to Billy everyone. Eight weeks old and a very welcome bringer of fun and optimism at the end of such a garbage year. Seems happy enough with his new home but then it’s only been half an hour.
She couldn’t be calmer or more polite. But she’s a woman and we know women freak him out. And she’s an expert and we know experts freak him out. And she’s got a proper job and etc. etc. Never in a million years would Hancock have spoken to a regular male MP like this.
Here how
@MattHancock
responds to
@DrRosena
, an ACTUAL front-line NHS worker, telling him many colleagues feel let down by the gov't testing strategy.
He tells her it's not true and to watch her tone.
It's easy to forget, because of how useless he is, just how nasty he can get.
I see this same bloke at the supermarket every Sunday morning and he’s usually got a post/punk T-shirt on like the Damned or the Pistols or the Cure. Anyway he’s just put the Daily Mail in his trolley so that’s his cred shot to shit.
In honour of the great Debbie Harry’s 75th birthday today: off the top of your head, favourite Blondie track (keep solo stuff out of it for now). I’ll tot ‘em up at the end.
Me? Fade Away and Radiate.
Personally I can’t understand anyone booing God Save the Queen. I know Steve Jones playing the bass is a bit of a swizz but believe me it’s better than Sid having a go.
While I’m toasting football teams and all that let’s raise a glass to the great Sean Dyche. As a Stoke fan I have no particular affection for Burnley FC but bloody hell that is what you call a proper manager doing a proper fucking job.
I know I don’t look it but I’m too young to have been into the VU the first time round and I was still a pre-teen when the Sex Pistols were effing and jeffing on teatime TV but thankfully the J&MC came along to combine them both into one handy package. 18/11/85. A perfect LP.
Sqwubbsy, poll tax riots, 32 years ago today. Don’t know why Rik was writing to the lead singer of Echo & the Bunnymen, it was Copey he wanted all along.
Thanks all for the kind thoughts about FJ. Sadly when we got him to the vets there was a list of reasons why he couldn’t go on, unrelated to his spine op. But in those 10 months he won for himself he really showed us what bravery looks like and for that I’ll always be grateful.
Lost my favourite uncle today. At various times he took me to see Superman, bought me The Dark Side of the Moon and lent me the novels of Emile Zola. Plus he had the best laugh of anyone I ever met. Rest in peace Roy and thanks.
Not sure how many people realise the significance of this pub in the development of the industrial revolution. Basically Wedgwood and Brindley done a beermat deal that opened up the midlands to Liverpool and the USA via a revolutionary canals system. Right here in this boozer.
John Peel pictured with The Fall on the occasion of his 50th birthday. Mark has thoughtfully given him a copy of Malcolm Allison’s autobiography. John should have been 80 today. RIP and thanks for setting me on all the right paths x
Just played The Eton Rifles as I frequently do. Fucking hell it’s brilliant. My favourite Jam song and one of my favourites by anybody. Everything about it is perfect. Plus who thought it would be even more relevant 40+ years later? 😕
Fun fact: if all the former members of The Fall stood two metres apart they would stretch from the Forester’s Arms in Prestwich to the Red Lion in Prestwich.
Most of the world is probably delighted that England lost. Well that’s fine but this manager and squad deserve better than anyone’s derision. I don’t really have a patriotic bone in my body but I’ve been proud of them. They are pretty much all we have left and they’ve been great.
Walked past a building site earlier and
@EdwynCollins
Girl Like You was on the radio. The guys were singing along as you’d expect and they knew pretty much all the words. Nothing unusual about that except they were all mid-20s at most. It’s a genuine cross-generational classic!
After a surprising level of interest in page 1 of my 80s gig ticket scrapbook last week may I respectfully submit pages 2 and 3 after which I regrettably must have got out of the collecting habit.
Growing up when/where I did you couldn’t ignore The Jam. Why would you? Setting Sons and Sound Affects are their Rubber Soul and Revolver. Sound Affects takes the crown only because nobody needs the Heatwave cover on Setting Sons. Sound Affects is perfect.
That page 1 of my 1980s ticket scrapbook in full. Prompted to share because I’m now playing
@vic_godard
’s mighty Moments Like These and funnily enough he & the Subway Sect were supporting Altered Images back in 1982 to great effect it has to be said.
Every morning I walk past this place in Fenton and wonder what their most popular tattoo is. ‘Fewer not less’ maybe or ‘actually Frankenstein was the name of the scientist’.
People thought I was making it up when I said our strictly parks-level indie band once topped a bill with the mighty Lush on it. In fact I was starting to wonder myself. But here’s confirmation from no less an authority than
@berenyi_miki
🎸👍🏼
Nice to see the Crescent is finally reopened in Buxton, Bath of the North. Not sure I can remember seeing it before without a load of fencing around it. Looks great.
Watching Public Enemy on the box. Still the best ‘band’ I’ve ever seen. The best hip hop, the best rock n roll, the best punk, the best soul and even the best metal. The most miraculous musical event of my lifetime.
18 years since Peel left us. Heard him take the piss out of Pink Floyd in 79: hooked. Owe him big time for The Fall, Cocteau Twins and J&MC plus so many others without whom I’d be someone else. Even played the Rosehips which says a lot about his commitment to equal opportunities.
