Alcohol is a drug
A pub is a drug consumption room
A Bar man is a drug dealer.
All done in a strictly regulated and controlled environment. Acceptable
Now imagine if alcohol was banned like others drugs.
Chaos!
Regulate and control all drugs.
Of all the drugs I've consumed in my adult life, Nicotine is the only drug I am addicted to. I won't get punished though, and it's my own personal responsibility to stop, knowing help is always there if I am ready to.
Shouldn't it be the same with all drugs? 🤷♂️
Imagine offering to do community service for being found with €4 worth of Cannabis and being told by a Judge, not until you get 'clean'.
The only thing wrong in all of this is the judiciary and the enforcement of these laws.
#CannabisReformIreland
Very proud youth worker today and proud of the 100+ youth workers who put their names to the letter calling for a conversation to bring an end to prohibition in Ireland. Thanks
@PatrickFreyne1
for a really great piece and helping get our message out.

German police urge Britons to choose weed over alcohol while attending Euro 2024. Meanwhile in Ireland they want to send you for treatment for cannabis use and continue going the pub instead.
If you consume Cannabis in a jurisdiction where it is legal and come home to Ireland and drive a few days later you can and will be prosecuted if you are stopped and drug tested. Ireland 2023
Corkman taking drug-driving test told gardaí: 'I will definitely fail. I was in Amsterdam at the weekend'
The man was fined €300 and was banned from driving for one year.
Its time to stop listening to the anti-cannabis brigade in Irish Psychiatry and call out the Journalists who write sensationalist fear mongering articles about drugs. They are responsible for misinforming the public and one of the main reasons we have so much shame and stigma.
There is nothing more I want than a change of government, but if SF are the likeliest to be that, and our prospective Taoiseach is sharing images of vulnerable people while trying to score points, it doesn't fill me with hope that they will change Drugs Policy.
On Thurs 3 small children & a teacher randomly & viciously stabbed here at Gaelscoil Cholaiste Mhuire. This is pick up time at same school yesterday. For all the hot air and diversions NO lessons have been learned by Govt. NO care or respect. No political accountability.
How can a Citizens Assembly vote against the status quo and at the same time conclude with keeping the status quo? Something does not sit right with me. Who has been mislead here?
#CADrugsUse
The Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 needs to be tore up and replaced with scentific harm reducing legislation. We have the infrastructure to manage drug use better we just need a new alternative to the current damaging and failed approach by alligning policy, research and practice.
Let's put The Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 into Recovery. Over 40 years misusing adults and children. I think its safe to say it needs treatment.
Who's up for a Misuse of Drugs Act 2021? 🙋♂️🙋♀️
#ReformMisuseOfDrugsAct1977
Very soon Cannabis will be decriminalised and it will have been down to the tireless work of
@Ginosocialist
, a politician who truly understands the damage Prohibition causes and who knows this is only an important first step in dismantling the war on drugs in Ireland. 👏✊
Very soon People Before Profit will bring forward an amendment to the Misuse of Drugs legislation. The Cannabis Regulation Bill 22 will decriminalise cannabis for personal use. It will be the first time in 10 years that a bill seeks to amend progressively the MUDA.Time for Change
What does legalisation look like in practice?
Many of us had a first job working in a bar or pub collecting glasses or promoted to bar man
We could do the same with Cannabis Clubs/Cafes which offer economic alternative for young people instead of dealing and a life of crime.
Very soon the Citizens Assembly will vote on the liberalisation of Irelands drug laws and they will do so without having been given expert international evidence, particularly from criminal justice experts and that has me anxious. The stakes are too high to not get this right.
Cannot believe today was my last day as a Youth Worker in Dublin. (I was damn good at what I do). Next week I will be a sole trader in Cork selling Coffees in Mallow train station. Come say hi 👋. Funny how life works out. 🙃
Youth Workers Against Prohibition couldn't feel more strongly about this. We need to end Prohibition. Regulate and control all drugs. Our communities and young people deserve better!
What's the current state of drug education in Ireland and who delivers it?
Considering we've all been grossly miseducated about drugs for the past 50 years, I have my concerns about its current effectiveness and potential to cause harm to those recieving it, mainly young people.
Even Ireland's Drugs Minister, Hildegarde Naughton, has tried cannabis.
She is lucky that synthetic cannabis wasn't around when she tried it - she could have ended up in hospital.
The Minister should take steps towards safe regulation to protect people like her.
Over 3,500 people on waiting lists for detox while 140 residential beds remain closed. Irelands drug strategy should be renamed.

This child was Irish and he was born here. This has nothing to do with his nationality. This is symptomatic of our disastrous drug policies and there are thousands of young Irish people caught up in this. The spin you are putting on this is sick. You are a racist grifter!!
What will drug decriminalisation look like in Ireland?
Minor possession no longer a criminal issue or offence.
Referral to youth and/or addiction services instead.
Supervised Injecting Facilities.
Drug Testing and Welfare at all major festivals
Cannabis Social Clubs for 18+
Having watched
@RTE_PrimeTime
investigates Ballymun last night we youth workers couldn't feel more strongly about this. We need to end prohibition, decriminalise and regulate drugs.

Everyday over the past couple of weeks we're hearing of increased use of illicit drugs, Cocaine, Crack, Ketamine etc
If you think tougher enforcement and more prohibition is the solution you are part of the problem. Ireland has a drug policy problem
#endprohibition

The problem with drug education in Ireland and where it failed before it even started was that it seeks to 'stop' or 'prevent' drug use.
In reforming drug education the narrative needs to be changed to 'delaying the onset' of drug use.
Accept that drug use is adult behaviour.
Right, time to dust of the cobwebs, roll up the proverbial sleeves and bring about change to Irelands brutal and barbaric drug policies. There are forces doing there damnedest to ensure minimal change actually happens and we must not let them stifle progression any further.
Women in Ireland have been punished for speaking up since the foundation of this state. Why are you afraid of women speaking up
@LeoVaradkar
@MichealMartinTD
Is this mother's punishment to be the denial of proper funding for her child's medicine? Are ye that spiteful?
There is no doubt that this shooting is inextricably linked to the illegal drugs trade. How many more young lives are we going to let be taken away or destroyed in this way? The Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 is the main driver of this harm and needs to be repealed to save lives.
Almost every harm drugs apparently cause are highlighted under sensationalist headlines in the Irish media (by Prohibitionists) but never a mention of the harms caused by Prohibition which far outweigh harms caused by drugs. 🤷♂️
We have failed to educate the public about drugs and are failing to educate our young people about drugs, in fact, we have nothing to say to them. It's time us adults grew up about drug use and advocated for sensible policies and education.
Cannabis prohibition and its consequences are a greater threat to people's mental health than cannabis use. Stop this nonsense. Needlessly criminalising good people for what is now legal in other jurisdictions is grotesque and unfair.
Poverty, deprivation and lack of services are all forms of structural violence. These lead to anti social behaviour. Rather than address these issues they are choosing to criminalise them instead with more structural violence.
@fiannafailparty
In terms of public health, if we regulate and control all drugs we can centre our work on being person centered and trauma responsive instead of stigmatising and othering. Drug use is not bad, our attitudes are.
Something I could never quite stomach is
@IrishPsychiatry
think that criminalising young people is the way to deter drug use. Well I can tell you lot now. All you do is push young people further into addiction and criminality.
#CannabisReformIreland
Well done New York 👏 40% Cannabis revenue going back to communities most affected.
Meanwhile, the collective shoulder shrugging amd ignorance particularly among our political class continues. We are a laughing stock at this stage. 🤦♂️
While we're in the business of repealing old laws, can we Repeal The Misuse of Drugs Act from 1977? Its causing more harm today, than it was back then...
More truth bombs from
@SenLynnRuane
how international drug policy is racist in its origins and continues to pursue those on margins of society. Disgusting and brutal regime that we must change.
Garda, Teachers, Civil Servants, the professional classes, make up the majority of drug users and are the main funders of the illegal drugs trade in Ireland.
Sure, Ballymun needs more Garda, Educational and Social Services but that won't do anything to surpress Criminal Gangs. Only reform of The Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 will create of Brighter Future for Ballymun and areas like it.
Has anyone noticed in almost all American TV shows, sitcoms and movies Cannabis is normalised? Rather than the usual "Hey, wanna grab a beer?" You might hear "Man, those edibles are strong".... Meanwhile, in Ireland Cannabis is as dangerous as driving a motorbike without a ⛑️
Over 20 years ago my mother died a drug related death that was preventable. Today, a further two more will perish because their lives don't matter enough. Wonder what the death toll is in this time?. An Oireachtas Committee if set up can change that. Get a move on!
#CADrugsUse
Since 1977 when the Misuse of Drugs Act was introduced in Ireland there has been a steady increase in the levels of drugs, the level of drug use, the level of addiction, the level of deaths, the levels of violence and the level of people in Prisons.
#EndProhibition
Instagram and Telegram is now the easiest way to buy illegal drugs in Ireland. Anything you want. There's even jobs if you are looking for extra money and live within the relevant postcode and you don't have to be over 14 years of age which is the legal age to work in Ireland.
Youth Workers Against Prohibition are looking forward to attending the stakeholders information session tomorrow on the upcoming Citizens Assembly on Drug Use.

The people have answered emphatically yes to these polls for years. The only people holding it up is cowardly politicians, administration in our government, our judiciary and anyone else whos funding is tied to the enforcement of prohibition.
Well, I never? In The Irish Sun of all the rags would have thought to find exceptional journalism!
'Flawed' Citizens’ Assembly on Drugs blasted as concerns raised over process
The heel dragging by our own politicians on this issue must end. Time to let go of the rope! Too many lives are and have been upended in Ireland due to Cannabis Prohibition. Enough of it, now!
If you want to know why people take drugs you will have to go back thousands of years. If you want to know why drugs became so harmful you go back to the beginning of Prohibition.
This coming Sunday 3rd September @ 9am - Youth Workers Against Prohibition will be presenting to the Citizens Assembly on Drug Use where we will make our argument for the Regulation of drugs!

This is a disgrace, our city in under seige right now by violent criminal drug gangs yet gardai telling us they dont have resources for increased community policing.? They would if they had their priorities right 🤬
Sorry this has happened to you guys. 😔
This country is flooded with unregulated banned drugs. Customs intercept a tiny percentage of what comes through. It is time for the State to regulate and control all drugs. It is a radical idea to think we can police our way out of this.
#EndProhibition
There are a lot of competing demands when it comes to changing our countries drugs laws. Shouldn't we all just call for repeal of The Misuse of Drugs Act 1977.? This way we can all get what we want without anyone being left behind? Except prohibitionists. They can get in the sea
I'm sorry to share this, but I feel I have to. Fuck Israel and all western countries complicit in the genocide of children. Dirty scummy neoliberal bastards the lot of them. I am ashamed on my country and the European Union. I despise Zionism. The world is fucked.
One of the reasons we're still wedded to current drug policies is that many people's careers and livelihoods are tied to the enforcement of such policies. There is geniune fear of change when all thats needed is reorientation and allignment of policy, research and practice.
How can we expect the general public to embrace reforms and overcome apparent fears surrounding drug use when the irish media continues to use anti drug messaging.? Whos interests are they serving, because it ain't the public.
@thejournal_ie
In a time when policing in Ireland is at crisis point, community relations at an all time low and issues with recruitment. There's time and resources still being used to criminalize and jail young men for possession of small amounts of Cannabis. Just wrong!
#EndProhibition
A 20 year old man was jailed for 4 months after buying four bags of cannabis.
According to Garda valuations this equated to about 17 grams, so just over half an ounce.
A young man's life completely ruined because of Ireland's war on cannabis.
@DaithiDoolan
We need Heroin Assisted Treatment (HAT) as part of medically supervised consumption rooms. Aside to warnings, we need solutions, but political parties seem unable to offer them.
Since the Misuse of Drugs Act was enacted in 1977. One of the main priorities of An Garda Siochana has been to enforce anti drug laws. They have had considerable success with enforcement, criminalising people in their thousands and this takes up most of their time.
Watching Hutch v Kinahan: Irelands Deadliest criminals.
More state sponsored propaganda to justify enforcing prohibition. Not one of the people featured on the show made the link to prohibition giving rise to these criminal gangs. To prevent this we need to change drug policy.
Will be a interesting discussion!!

Kildare judge criticises pressure to legalise cannabis.
He said research at European Union level had shown that over 70% of regular cannabis users had suffered irreversible brain damage as a consequence “because of smoking dope.”
How can we move forward in advancing our response to drug use using a "health led approach" when our most senior addiction specialist continues to use gateway logic?
The edifice on which the drug war was founded is crumbling in its own backyard. Oregan and now Washington decriminalises possession. Not to mention states with medical and recreational Cannabis. USA are rolling back on the war on drugs. Why aren't we?
That means since the assembly has finished its work and while we waited for the Oireachtas Committee to be set up and do its work, many have died needlessly during this time. I expect nothing less than the entire 36 recommendations to be implemented, not discussed. We want change
