Important to note that our conclusions depend not just on the results of model integrations, but on our understanding of the mechanisms involved. Still, little is certain in this business, and it does not mean the risk of collapse is not there, even if we think it is unlikely.
🌊 Today in @Nature: Is the AMOC on the brink of collapse? Unlikely before 2100—but the risks are real 🚨 We find Southern Ocean winds keep this vital ocean “heat engine” running, even under extreme #climatechange. But the Pacific holds a surprise… Let’s explore 🧵👇

Obviously, teaching mathematics (which Lehrer chose to do) is just some obscure profession not worthy of the finer minds. Who knew?

In the 1950s and 60s, his songs stunned and delighted listeners with their irreverence, wit and nihilism. Then he gave it all up to teach mathematics. Lehrer is still alive at 96 – so I went in...

Not only was the late Jimmy Buffett a great songwriter, but he also understood the profound differences in atmosphere/ocean dynamics between mid-latitudes and equatorial regions...

The article itself isn't so bad, and gives a reasonable account of some topical research. But in true #Guardian style the headline is doom-laden and melodramatic. It doesn't help. And what was once a fine newspaper has become a tabloid.

The Gulf Stream is a wind-driven current. It isn't going to collapse unless the winds cease or the Earth stops rotating, neither of which will happen soon. The AMOC is a different beast, but the headline might equally well have said 'The AMOC is unlikely to collapse by 2025'.

The sad thing about twitter is that, although many of the tweets yesterday were evidently meant to mark the day (April 1), they were barely less believable than many in the usual crop.

Happy new year! What better way to celebrate being back in work than to read about theories of inhomogeneous and anisotropic turbulence? Well you're in luck. Just published by @AnnualReviews of Fluids. Review by @Brad_Marston and me... https://t.co/Qs9KP1r2UO

The point is surely not to move to some smaller community where everyone has the same views and you preach to the choir. The point is to be in a large community where other views exist, and you try to inform and persuade. Perhaps that will be #musktwitter.
Where does #energytwitter and #climatetwitter go when Twitter becomes #musktwitter? What platforms can best serve our communities?
