Not to beat a dead horse, but the end of pensions played a big role here.
Just one lifetime ago in the United States, our grandfathers could buy a home, buy a car, have 3 to 4 children, keep their wives at home, take annual vacations, and then retire… all on one middle-class salary. What happened?.

Not to give Boomers a free pass but isn’t the death of pensions the main cause here? . The end of pensions made retirement safety insecure and so more people held onto their jobs longer. It’s less about ego and more about unintended consequences.
