Let me start by saying I never followed politics in Australia, and I don’t really follow politics now in NZ ..... but I know a great leader of people when I see one and every person in NZ should be damn proud of Jacinda Ardern. Oozes leadership!
Had a father and young son stop me in the street near SkyCity today to say thank you for this year’s
#SalsNBL
- they have watched all 49 games on
@skysportnz
and loved it, but haven’t been able to get to a game yet. Gave them tickets to Tuesday night’s finals.

I’m an 80s teen and grew up on rock - tonight I saw
@edsheeran
in a 1200-seat theatre in Wellington and he might just be the most authentic and complete musician I’ve ever seen. I’d quite happily buy him a beer and chat about life. Just a genuinely good bloke enjoying the ride.
Media across NZ needs to step up and talk more about
@Char_legerwalks
who is playing and delivering in front of big crowds and viewers right now. Nowhere near enough coverage on home soil for a genuine rising star of a global game. We need to do better.
The journey here in NZ continues. Cheers to all and thanks for the ongoing support. Still haven’t lost the Aussie twang, but feeling at home here in Aotearoa. Thanks for putting up with me 👍
3 x
@nznbl
competitions completed - 152 games played - 180hrs live coverage on
@skysportnz
- thanks to the fans for the support - thanks to the doubters for the extra motivation - thanks to the media for enjoying the journey. I think we did ok in 2020. See you all in 2021. 🤘
Some media gets it, but others remain blind. Basketball is a global game that basically EVERY country plays, not a dozen or so like some other sports. Tall Blacks beat Montenegro at the World Cup and some news outlets don’t give it a mention. Out of touch or ....
SEE THE POSSIBLE - must watch!!!
Amazing vision just minutes after the
@TauihiNZ
Final - star guard Florencia Chagas (MVP of the championship game) on court with a fan who wanted tips from her idol.
You can’t be what you can’t see!
@TokomanawaQueen
@skysportnz
@flopychagas
For years basketball has been dubbed a ‘sleeping giant’ - a sellout last night in Wellington, a sellout tomorrow night in New Plymouth … and 8 teams still battling for the Final 6 with 5 games remaining.
Make a competition competitive and the fans will turn up. ✅
We’ve tried hard to get most things right, but there is no way we could have scripted the
#SalsNBL
Grand Final any better than that. Well done
@otagonuggetsnbl
and
@manawatujets
for putting on an amazing
@nznbl
show for the fans!
Consider this - Basketball is a GLOBAL sport - 7.5 BILLION people living on this 🌍- New Zealand U18 women just won a Silver Medal in the 3x3 World Cup - finished 2nd only to USA (pop. 330 Million) - Let’s see the media pick that up and run with it.
@NZStuffSport
@skysportnz
Just want to wish the
@BLACKCAPS
all the best in the T20 final. I fell out of love with cricket when the Aussies blatantly cheated with sandpaper, but I’m starting to rediscover my inner fan watching these Kiwis conquer the world. Go get ‘em!
Thank you to everyone who voted for us - much appreciation. I’m very proud and happy for my staff, the players, teams, officials, commercial partners …. and most importantly, the fans! 🙏
Thankful we fully completed our
@nznbl
season in a hub model that many first questioned.
@NBA
now doing the same,
@NBL
now looking at the same. Other sports also looking at this model. Not something any sport expected, but the world has changed. Stay safe.
Great to see
@RealStevenAdams
sitting courtside tonight at
@TauihiNZ
and supporting NZ’s new women’s league. So many young players across the competition have enjoyed his camps and invitationals over the years. He must be proud watching them take their steps into pro hoops.
Just watched back the
@xaviercooks10
post-game interview on
@skysportnz
after last night’s
@saintswgtn
finals loss - full respect for this guy. Spoke with class, dignity and honesty. Thanks for being a part of the
@nznbl
Xavier - you gave us amazing highlights & memories. MVP
Grand Final Day! Still can’t put into words what has been achieved and the list of people to thank is way too long, but I do want to say thank you once again to the 7 teams and 84 players who DID BELIEVE 🙏 - I hope you have enjoyed the experience.
#SalsNBL
@nznbl
Never would have thought the last 11 days would deliver more than 450 registrations for the
#SalsNBL
draft. Amazing. Thanks to all the teams, players, coaches, media, fans and sponsors who have supported this concept. Now all eyes are on Thursday’s draft!
@skysportnz
🙏
Absolutely love this .... Beatrix Loos has attended every game of the 2020
#SalsNBL
Showdown - I know we announced our All-Star Five on Sunday night, but she is my All-Star.
@nznbl
@skysportnz
@NZStuffSport
Heard the ANBL won’t get going until December at the earliest. I know a league the
@NZBreakers
players could play in right now. One Breaker per
@nznbl
team - we could even have a draft! Our USA audience might like that! What do you think
@mattyvincent44
? 🤔😜😉👍
I know people will come at me with security fears … I get it … but imagine if every sport found a way to do this after every game.
Want to build fandom? Do it through connection, inclusion and a fans first mentality. It works.
Spent last night putting together a draft 2020 season schedule for the
#SalsNBL
women’s competition. Let’s hope it comes to life later this year and we see more of NZ’s top 🏀 athletes back on court.🤞
Many people play or coach or work in sport but then you have those who also transcend sport. Kenny McFadden was one of those people and basketball across NZ owes great thanks. RIP Kenny.
Still have to pinch myself that we managed to complete 152 games in the
@nznbl
last year without any players missing due to Covid. We are extremely fortunate here in NZ.
Really pleased to receive this news, such a wonderful leader. I love this quote - “This is where I made a living, this is where I got discovered, playing in this league.” In a time of need for the
#SalsNBL
, Mika is giving back and I admire that greatly. 🙏
Great news for the
#SalsNBL
today with
@huw_beynon
joining us as the League’s Media Manager. Quality appointment. Also the new
@TallBlacks
Team Manager following a stellar spell by
@DewyNZ
I would be very surprised if every
@NBL
team isn’t looking at the positive player/staff/business value of either owning or linking with a
@nznbl
team. What the
@PerthWildcats
and
@otagonuggetsnbl
are creating under the same ownership is incredibly smart. It’s next level thinking.
Yes, it’s real. The
#SalsNBL
is back - an incredible opportunity for 84 players and 7 teams, and for all of our fans. Bring it on! Thank you all for your help and support 🙏
A massive thanks to these two (and the
@skysportnz
team). Calling 10 games a week is a massive job and takes a real pro. Well done
@huw_beynon
and
@Kseefrank
- the voices of
@nznbl
basketball! 🤘
I hope the work we are doing in the
@nznbl
is showing young boys and girls, corporate and commercial decision makers, funders, media, fans and all of our amazing athletes that basketball is absolutely worth backing. We are a global sport and capable of BIG things. Get on board!

The
@GiantsNZNBL
head home tomorrow. Thank you to all of the Giants players, coaches, sponsors and fans for being a part of the
#SalsNBL
season. Your support of the concept and way you carried yourselves throughout is greatly appreciated 🙏
To the decision-makers and the NZ public, on behalf of the teams, players, coaches, officials, volunteers, staff, colleagues, fans, sponsors, broadcasters and media that have helped keep the
#SalsNBL
men & women alive .... Thank You 🙏
I think basketball in AUS/NZ can dominate youth sport by making all pre-High School games 3X3 only. Quicker skill development (all skills) and more chances to play (not sit on the bench). You can’t hide in 3X3, you have to play, which is what kids want. Small change = big results
Thanks
@SkyCityGroup
and Auckland for taking care of us for the last 44 days. There is no way we could have done this without you.
#SalsNBL
.... time to head home.
Every single media/news channel, source and outlet in NZ should be covering this news today …
In a global game (yes, bigger than a Commonwealth sport) what Kirk Penney has just achieved is enormous 👏👏👏
To the
@otagonuggetsnbl
- congratulations. The way you have conducted yourselves over the last 6 weeks is a credit to you all. To the Nuggets fans - celebrate this title. Yes, this season has been different, but in so many ways it has been one of the hardest ever to win! Enjoy!
It’s time to start celebrating and enjoying the opportunity to play basketball again while the rest of the world watches on and wishes they could do the same. We are very lucky to be back on court.
Over the coming weeks I’m sure I’ll post lots of thank you messages, but I’d just like to say well done to
@jeff_cheshire
and everyone at ODT on brilliant daily coverage of the
#SalsNBL
.... Basketball has basically taken over at ODT these last 6 weeks. Amazing. 🙏
One step at a time, it’s a process and I’m pleased to say it feels like we are building something really special and sustainable. Lots of hard work ahead for all of us.
Let’s not forget that it’s a privilege to be back on court in the
@nznbl
- so many people around the world would love to be doing what we are. I hope everyone is enjoying it and it’s bringing some happiness during tough times. 🙂
Enjoyed being in the house to see
@MelbBoomers
win the
@WNBL
championship. A memorable moment for so many people, especially an amazing fan base. Congratulations.
A big thank you to the many people who have helped bring this together. Can’t wait to see the 7 teams in action and the 70+ players returning to do what they love doing.
#SalsNBL
Bit emotional watching this - the
@nznbl
has grown so much over the last few years - to see so many fans enjoying the great entertainment delivered by the teams is fantastic 👏
Arrived here two years ago today. Still a ripper of a city (especially when the sun is out) and still have plenty of unfinished business ahead of me with
@nznbl
2021 just around the corner.
@marchintonnz
The fans should always come first. Players and coaches come and go - but if you treat your fans right, include them and engage with them, you’ll have them for life.
A special thank you to Mr & Mrs Kenny! After Saturday’s
@nznbl
Grand Final, Jarrod Kenny’s parents gave me this gift and said thank you for putting this season on. I will share this with my staff - they deserve a glass (or two) - thank you Mr & Mrs Kenny, much appreciated 🙏
It started with a vision 2yrs ago - a big thanks to the
@TauihiNZ
and
@BasketballNZ
staff for getting this one to the line - well done. And a huge thanks to
@skysportnz
and
@GJGardner_NZ
for supporting this great new league. Best of luck to the teams and players. Enjoy a new era!
Have to say - I’ve just seen the
@TallFerns
deliver a fantastic win over Korea. That’s world 35 beating world 18 in a game played by nearly every country on the planet! Bloody proud to be an adopted Kiwi! 👍
Missed opportunity - the
@WNBL
&
@NBL
should have played a DH tonight in Melbourne.
Playing a WNBL game at 3pm Wednesday at a venue that never hosts games is accepting mediocrity & putting fans second.
If you don’t have fans you don’t have teams. A step backwards today.
I need to be careful talking about BA’s decision on Mt Gambier .... however, being an Australian myself and growing up always being told to roll your sleeves up and have a go, to have a crack and give it a shot, it’s tough to see an Aussie club held back from doing just that.
I learnt a long time ago that you’ll never please 100% of the people 100% of the time, but thank you to the many people who have helped get
@nznbl
back on court. Big thumbs up to all of you.

Good times for Kiwi basketball.
Feeling good after 7 nights of
#SalsNBL
competition. Every team with a win and every team with a loss. The race for the 2020 Showdown title is wide open and we have a long way to go!
Wonder if the media will give some love over the next few days to
@TauihiNZ
player Tiarna Clarke (Whai) - the 3X3 star will be representing NZ in Birmingham shortly … but to warm up she has dropped 11 x triples today in a 34pt onslaught 😮
@skysportnz
@NZStuffSport
@SENZ_Radio
Might be time for mainstream media in NZ to start reporting more on local hoops - clearly the community is voting with their feet and flocking to games in big numbers.
Tough decisions made today, but you have to stay positive in times like this. My whole focus right now is on our people, especially the players, and doing all we can to get them back to work in a safe environment.
Let’s not forget that for so many athletes their chosen sport is also their profession, it is how they earn a living and put food on the table, it’s how they provide for their family. Shutting down sport comes at a cost, just like any other business. The human element is real.
Really good appointment -
@dbouch24
is the perfect person to help lead the game into an exciting era - it’s vital basketball shows it’s collective strength here and works as one with Dillon leading the charge.
We are looking forward to welcoming Dillon Boucher, who will be joining Basketball New Zealand on 18 October as the new Chief Executive. Media release here:
Congratulations to everyone at the
@CanterburyRams
on claiming your first
@nznbl
title since 1992. Most importantly - congrats to all the fans- you have never wavered in your support for the Rams - this one is for you. Enjoy!
49 games down and now on to the 7 games that will decide the 2020
#SalsNBL
Showdown champs! It’s been a long journey and we have taken a few knocks along the way, but let’s now enjoy a massive week coming up for NZ basketball.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I remember a few months back when some questioned whether there was enough Kiwi depth for a
#SalsNBL
player draft? A good reminder is Nate Wilson and Matt Bardsley were both picked up in the last round of the draft. Question answered I guess.
Officially a
#SalsNBL
sell-out tonight for the
@CanterburyRams
vs
@AucklandHuskies
game in Christchurch - great crowd. Even Dame Valerie Adams is with us. Terrific support & atmosphere.
Off the back of a successful 2020 season, grateful for the chance to keep building our
@nznbl
business and deliver a great product and elite level talent to the teams, fans, sponsors, viewers, community and local players. A huge boost to the League’s 40th year.
What a great photo. Talk about capturing a moment. For me the
#SalsNBL
season went to script - it kept the fans entertained until the very last second. That’s a great product! Well done all.
Maybe I’m just naive, but surely sports funding should equally be based on the sports that the community is playing, not just on winning medals. Aren’t we servicing tax payers first and foremost and if more of them play a certain sport, shouldn’t that sport be rewarded?
Pleased to see tough decisions, change mentality, a business focus and competitive balance starting to deliver positives in the
@nznbl
- this has to be the most balanced sports comp in NZ with every team having a genuine chance of winning each game. Great for the fans/viewers.
A tip for ‘some’ Aussie politicians right now .... STOP being politicians and START being human. The people who pay you to do a job now need you to look after them, as humans.
More than 100 players and coaches arrive in Auckland tomorrow. I continue to be thankful to each and every one of them for helping us keep the
#SalsNBL
breathing. In 2021 this league will turn 40 and the efforts of so many in 2020 will play a huge part in that happening.
Have heard a bit of commentary that the
@nznbl
doesn’t want a team in Waikato-Bay of Plenty. Fact is after approving an Expression of Interest, a Formal Bid was sought and the interested group didn’t submit one. Don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story. I’m all for WBOP
I’m hearing there are a number of
#SalsNBL
parties taking place in Dunedin, Christchurch, Palmy Nth and New Plymouth tonight. Pardon the Aussie language - but I bloody love hearing that! Have a great time all, enjoy the Semi Finals action on
@skysportnz
🤘
The
@nznbl
has been a part of NZ for 39yrs, but today more than 200 players and 16 teams are feeling left out. We are working so hard to make 2020 a success for everyone, including our semi-pro and pro athletes. A little of that package could have made a massive difference.
Fielding questions on today's relief package for sports. We can assure our community that
@BasketballNZ
advocated strongly for
#SalsNBL
to be included. The reason for omission remains unclear, but we will continue working hard to put on an incredible comp come tip off on 23 Jun.
Some days in sport are busier than others, but the ☀️ will come up tomorrow and on we move. I have 7 great NZ teams to look after and more on the way in 2021. Thanks for the brief ride
@SouthernHuskies
- and most importantly a big thank you to the fans.
Saw the news about the 2023 FIFA WWC - congrats to all involved, another great day for Kiwi and Aussie sport. I’m so pleased for the athletes as well - when you’re involved in a global sport it is always so good to play in front of family & friends.
Basketball continues to lead the way in NZ by embracing change and innovation. Thank you to
@nznbl
@TauihiNZ
@BasketballNZ
@skysportnz
and all the teams for working together to bring these to life.

Great to see the
@WNBL
up and going for 2020. The ‘hub model’ presents players, coaches, officials and administrators with a whole array of new challenges. They will all experience a season like never before. Well done also to the QLD government on backing the league 👍🌴🏀
