Delighted to have this review out with @jpjhall! We discuss the risk of transmission of antimicrobial resistance in the hospital sink drain microbiome, highlight studies providing evidence of transfer, and consider strategies to mitigate these risks πŸͺ πŸ¦  https://t.co/w7btHu1NcX

Happy to finally have this out! It has been a fun side-project that we’ve been slowly working on for a while 🍜 I think it has turned out as a nice story, and demonstrates some important issues with classifications in genome databases. All from investigating a contaminant! ‡️

The laboratory contaminant Noodlococcus was named for its coccoid cells and unusual colony morphology, which resembled a pile of noodles. Along with laboratory characterisation and electron microsc...

Happy Noodlococcus Day to all those who celebrate 🍜🦠 On this day in 2019, we discovered this noodle-y colony contaminating an old plate, leading to the creation of ContamClub 🧫✨

Not so fun for me but very glad to be home after 7 weeks in hospital following a 14.5 hour heart surgery. Turns out I've had endocarditis for nearly 9 years despite years of antibiotic treatment. Hopefully the surgery and antibiotics this time will clear it πŸ€žπŸ«€πŸ’Š

Fun fact about this year's ContamCalendar - it was created entirely from a hospital bed after I spent 7 weeks in hospital following heart surgery. This surgery was actually partially related to both contamination and the ContamCalendars.... πŸ“†πŸ«€πŸ©ΊπŸ¦

On this day in 1928, Alexander Fleming returned from holiday and started sorting through some petri dishes containing Staphylococcus that he had left on his bench whilst away. πŸ–οΈπŸ§« One of the plates caught his eye, and made for the ultimate ContamClub submission:

@GEMcCallum takes us behind the scenes of their #MGen publication, where they focussed on creating a workflow for analysing meta3C/Hi-C data for linking resistance genes to their bacterial hosts in the human gut in our latest blog. Read it here πŸ‘‡
