Given that it was the 11th anniversary of the September earthquake yesterday, and the damage that quake did to the bars of High St and Poplar Lane, I’ve put my essay from about it all up on my Substack

A few years ago we created a publication called Institutional Love. We invited a range of writers and artists to speculate on the need to protect, support, and lovingly critique the many, varied, and complex institutions that make up our world.

A bit over ten years ago we naively started a small cooperative publishing company. Amazingly we are still going and have produced over 30 publications! Just look at it all!

We have a real dilemma as a publishing company based in NZ. It costs ungodly amounts to post from NZ, so using an international store like Amazon and print on demand makes sense. But it's Amazon and we try to push for more progressive modes... so what to do?

@therealgregjack We're not very good at talking about death and dying in this country. It might be a Pākehā cultural problem in particular, I'm not sure. But we should get better at it. One of the many reasons I really value the @FreerangePress book on death and dying in NZ

one of the essays I mention in this piece is from our @FreerangePress book, “Once In A Lifetime.” If you want lessons from Christchurch, it’s a good place to start, and we have a handful of copies left
