A Friday evening read for you on America's Pakistan gambit against Chinese resource domination. It is objectively brilliant. Even if I hadn't written it, I would've shared it. 👇

I’d love Ashok Kumar, Political Economist, to explain how he got to 27%. But he didn’t. He copied Tharoor, who misquotes Maddison, who in turn is basically just assuming India’s gdp/c to be $550 from 1500-1750. He’s measuring population, in other words, not prosperity

I like how the current moment has elements of railroad boom (investment in new era infrastructure like hyperscaler datacenters requiring heavy capex), dot com bubble (Mag-7 driven stock market) and the pre-GFC style financial innovation (private credit) all rolled into one.
I mentioned this on one of the recent episodes, maybe Sunday's with Dirk Willer, but one problem with the attempts to compare this market to 1999 is that so much of the action market-cap wise is happening in private markets. Can't cleanly compare how much mcap is profitable.

Wake up babe another “it came to me in a dream” India stat dropped
Hartley-Brewer: Why is colonialism bad? Me: “When Britain arrived in 1700s India had 27% of global GDP. After 200 years of theft and millions starved to death by 1947 India had 3% of global GDP, 90% living below the poverty line, a literacy rate of 17% and life expectancy of 27”

Hilarious to have the breakdown of European social democracy coincide with the unstoppable rise of Chinese communism. The Leninists were borne out

This clinic is a great example of mixing different treatments to better outcomes. It does both addiction and psychosis management for cannabis therapy. https://t.co/layqSuZPCC

Katie hears voices and has been sectioned 50 times. Isiah became paranoid and tried to kill himself. Both link their illness to cannabis – and the drug is getting more and more potent. Is a tiny...

NHS talking therapy units are integrating AI chatbots into the interim before you have access to real talking therapy (usually CBT) and it’s working reasonably well. I do think there are a series of opportunities which a single integrated healthcare system can benefit from,

Tired policies We need to totally rethink how we do health management, not just for men, and there’s a real opportunity to be ahead of the curve on things like psychedelic therapy and AI-supported behavioural changes (e.g exercise)

Excluding brain research, KCLs most productive and profitable research unit is War Studies. Easily

Not what OP is arguing, but it’s much more accurate to think of huge universities as hedge funds with potentially profitable research functions attached. At KCL, the fact that institutional woke is so heavy on War Studies is because protest/bad PR is bad for business

Sorry she also asks “how does affect me” and “how does this affect my family”. Don’t want to be misleading

I’ve actually never seen someone as sensitive to personal special interests as this. The only question she seems to ever ask is “how does this affect British Jews”
I once believed in liberal immigration. After witnessing the anti-Jewish hatred in London, I don’t anymore. Multiculturalism is broken and Britain needs the courage to say so and take control. I’m sick of being lectured by those who haven’t witnessed what I have

Mahmood is actually fascinating. Something of Nixon-in-China about a hardline Home Secretary of Pakistani origin. Law and Order head. “Bloody Tough Woman”. I think she means it actually, but is in part worried about anger boiling over into out and out racist violence if not

More than Streeting or Rayner (lol??), I expect Mahmood is gunning for the top job. Though, unlike Streeting or Rayner, I don’t think the party lets it happen.

Weathered Pole I know observed that the mood in Britain now reminds him of Poland when he left. Except “brain drain” Brits are even more mobile with English as the mother tongue
@maxtempers I’d say about 20% of my social group actively has one eye on abroad opportunities at the moment. And I’ve lost tens of friends this year who have moved abroad too. Selection effect at play but VAT on school fees was the final kick in the teeth for many, and senior british

I do find it strange that multiple political figures and institutions are involved in this programme to proselytise the opera. I don’t understand why it has such an oversized symbolic importance
