When parents are skipping meals because they cannot afford formula, when midwives worry about feeds being kept longer than is safe because families cannot afford to waste, "excessive" maternity pay isn't the problem. https://t.co/MLsueHUfNu

This great video by @IFAN typifies being a ‘critical friend’ 4 people living in poverty & food insecurity, ie. pointing out, from front line experience of doing something practical 2 help people in food crisis, that food banks are not a sustainable solution to the problem.

Great 2 have you visit us in Scotland this month sharing research insights & perspectives at our @ahdrc ‘Understanding food insecurity in Aberdeen’ webinar last week. You gave us much food for thought, and great pointers at solutions that are needed and, make a difference.

Your excellent work in Canada on the hidden public health crisis of infant food insecurity in high income countries, that’s been hiding in plain sight for too long in the UK, provides good evidence about what would help parents most 2 cope with it - more money in their pockets.

Check out this extensive report on infant food insecurity in the UK. It Mirrors our work on the issue here in Canada. Our Feeding in the Early Years Study in NS found that 31% of households were food insecurity. 4% of those stole formula from the store to feed their babies

More sobering news from IFAN, that shouldn’t really be a surprise, but important 2 continue 2 highlight. UK society & our governance structures have normalised charity food aid to manage poverty for a decade+, & despite lots of heroic local effort it’s not sustainable or working!

Good 2 see a focus on socio-economic & political determinants of infant feeding practices, & the need for govts & society 2 adequately value infant feeding labour. That ‘breastfeeding is not cost free’ was also a welcome message 2 hear @ #ProtectBreastfeeding @TheLancet launch!

Breastfeeding “ignored by mainstream economic accounting”. The treatment of breastfeeding as free/cost less and a “lifestyle choice” is “completely perverse”. It means governments do not recognise value of breastfeeding. #ProtectBreastfeeding

Great 2 C this messaging by @FEED to @APPGIFI about the importance maternal household food security as a pre-requisite for infant food security, regardless of whether parents choose to breast or formula feed. @FranklyLess work on this issue in Canada is worth noting too.

Food insecurity undermines breastfeeding, & women cannot be a secure food source for their infant if they themselves are food insecure #endinfantfoodinsecurity #supportMums

Food insecurity, chronic and episodic, has got steadily worse over the last decade causing unnecessary misery and ill health for far too many people in the UK.
