Delighted to spend yesterday with @EnvAgencyMids & @UniOfHull at #SevernHam tagging #TwaiteShad as part of @SevernUnlocked. Great to see the tangible benefit the project brings first hand as these beauties make their way upstream to spawn.

Faced with barriers to migration, how do animals respond? We found that some sea lamprey stay put downstream of weirs, and others wander substantial distances. In our new paper we examine the patterns, causes and consequences of this variation https://t.co/t6bEAf84k9

Tagged sea lamprey struggling to pass weirs in the Severn during their upstream spawning migration. A typical fate for migratory fish in our fragmented river systems, often occurring out of sight (+out of mind?). Read the full story in our new paper here https://t.co/1y3TUhx6s9

Well this is exciting, my very first article has been published! Check it out if you’re interested in tagging effects and how size of smolts influence outmigration estimates. Thank you for a great collaboration @kwvollset @FisheriesRobert @ErlendMHanssen and more.

We consistently find that tagged salmon migrate earlier than untagged (see https://t.co/x4EwyIFh9f). @MagnusHulbak figured out why! https://t.co/eyMXj77uC5. Larger fish migrates earlier - so if you have size limit of how small salmon you tag you get a biased outmigration date.

Lovely to see the first run of Twaite shad last week on the Severn. These are a rare freshwater herring which really struggle with barriers to migration. @SevernUnlocked @severnrivers @ninaconstable @BBCSpringwatch

Salmon are very capable jumpers & swimmers but they also have major problems passing Annacotty weir. This ornamental weir delays their migration. They can suffer injuries & all waste valuable energy. Many do not make it upstream. Please sign the petition: https://t.co/kBjs64TYNg
