When four navigational weirs were built on the Severn they blocked the route of the twaite shad as they made their way upriver. Now, a system of fish passes means they can come home to breed

We are so proud of the brilliant efforts of our #GreenTeam. Rain or shine these folks are always working together for nature πͺπΏπ
Our Green Team #volunteers on Diglis Lock Island #Worcester have been hedge laying. They will lay it through the wood using hazel coppiced on the island to provide habitat for nesting birds and let more light into the woodland. Brilliant π #VolunteerbyWater @SevernUnlocked

Fascinating results from our PhD student @MYeldham, looking at the timings of when twaite shad begin their #SevernShadRun ππ Do have a read of the full paper via the link in Mark's post below. π #FollowTheShad @BU_Research @HullUniScience @EnvAgencyMids
In the first output from my PhD research, we find that day length is the most significant predictor of when twaite shad return to the River Severn during their spawning migrations, with high individual repeatability in timing of river entry between years: https://t.co/fxJMimcZsV

With the recession in river levels @EnvAgencyMids #FisheriesOfficers have been doing the rounds to check flood areas for stranded fish. Today in #Worcester on the racecourse they rescued 31 #pike, #carp, #perch plus many small #dace, #chub & #bleak returned safely to the river.

Looking back through pics on my phone and found this video from the16/05/22. Only a middling tide, but I had the world to myself. Great to see the Bore form a barrel on the Church Rock. I like to think lots of shad, elvers and salmon were hitching a ride! β¦@SevernUnlockedβ©
