Fun Facts with Fenner on Fridays #1: Sterile drapes are blue/green to help reduce the eye strain from looking at the operative field. They used to be white, but looking away from field caused a blue/green negative image that was too distracting.

We had a blast at last night’s annual junior resident game night at @macky_neal’s ! We battled it out in trivia about our faculty, reverse charades, and even a kazoo challenge to claim the Top Dog trophy. Such a fun night with an awesome crew, and a real treat having @Edith_Tz

REBOA = higher mortality (47% vs 36%), more transfusions, longer time to OR. No survival benefit. Check the new study by Hatchimonji et al. https://t.co/RnQGoCdJXI and Jansen's commentary https://t.co/s3qqRcWi6C.

We've learned 2 things coming out of the shutdown. 1. Congressional Republicans refuse to lessen health care costs 2. Our President is willing to let Americans starve for political leverage 1/2

When I was a medical student, I vividly recall taking care of very very sick patients with acute pancreatitis in the ICU. Remarkable to see how APOC3 inhibition (here, olezarsen) is now shown to be a highly effective therapy for severe hypertriglyceridemia, esp among those with

“But the welfare queens!” - a myth even in the Reagan era. Most recipients are kids, working parents, older adults, or people with disabilities. Over 60% of families with kids on SNAP have an adult with a job. Fraud? Less than 1%.

SNAP is an incredible economic stabilizer (on a micro and macro level): benefits can be obtained in less than 7 days, and every $1.00 in SNAP benefits generates $1.50-1.80 in revenue for local businesses.

SNAP is incredibly efficient and effective: 82% of eligible households receive benefits. And for 90%, SNAP is their only welfare benefit used.

Thankful to have learned these lessons from @macky_neal over the past 1.5 years. Always fun when @PittSurgery takes over a AAST/EAST webinar.

He traveled the country performing the procedure (as many as 25 per day) on a widespread patient population - including children as young as 4 and JFK’s sister (Rosemary). Hundreds of patients died following the procedure, and he was ultimately banned from “operating” in 1967.

While this change in technique transformed the procedure into an “office procedure,” it also lost him his partner (neurosurgeon James W. Watts) for that very reason. Because he no longer required general anesthesia, he could perform lobotomies quickly in psychiatrists’ offices.

His assistant (son) held the patient down while Dr. Freeman delivered electroshock therapy to the patient (and his son), inducing a seizure. Once the patient was post-ictal, he used an ice-pick shaped tool to perform the lobotomy transorbitally.

Fun Facts with Fenner #6: The Lobotomobile. Dr. Walter Freeman, a psychiatrist credited with popularizing the lobotomy in the US, traveled the country in his VW van performing the procedure. While he didn’t perform the procedure in his van, he did have quite the technique.
