The surge in female Neets has been blamed on rising mental health conditions amongst women and girls, with 36.1% of females aged 16 to 24 reporting suffering from common mental health conditions – ranging from panic disorder and OCD to phobias.

The number of 16-24 year olds who are not in employment, education or training (Neets) is rising, with 948,000 young people across Britain classed as Neets by the end of June, according to the ONS. The number of female Neets in the three month to June rose by 25,000 to 450,000.

Sir Paul Tarn, the CEO of Delta Academies Trust, which runs 58 schools, many serving disadvantaged white communities: “Children here are not born different from any other child,” he insists. “If you don’t get aspiration from your parents, you have to get it from your teachers.”

Statistically, white British pupils perform worse at school than those from every other ethnic minority background, apart from black Caribbean and categories of traveller children. Why? Because many poor white, working class families ‘lack aspiration’.
