Just finished a presentation for the @alcdsb entitled “Including All Learners in French Immersion.” By sharing research evidence, I tried to debunk the belief that FI is ‘unsuitable’ for struggling readers, multilingual learners, & students with developmental disabilities. 🤓.

On #FrenchImmersionDay, we should celebrate the progress that’s been made to support our at-risk readers! We now have standardized screening tools to identify struggling readers & a structured literacy program, Son-au-graphe, that’s research-based & highly effective.
Started using @gecdsbpro Son-au-graphe with this group of SKs in December as part of their language program. Look at them go—reading connected text with confidence! Emphasis put on tracking with their finger to support decoding and directionality. #EarlyLiteracy #ReadingSuccess

When it comes to French immersion, #dyslexia “should not prevent children from learning to read and write in both languages, [French & English]” (Genesee & Erdos, 2019).

An excellent episode! I would have liked @JamieMetsala to include the frustrations of families of struggling readers in French immersion, reported during the @OntHumanRights Inquiry. So many said their kids were refused support of any kind (pp. 100, 336).
📢 New episode with Jamie Metsala dedicated to all reading advocates (math next)! Why are some provinces still using ineffective methods to teach reading? .❌Pitfalls of balanced literacy.📖 Structured literacy.📢 Ontario’s Right to Read report.🛠️ How to advocate.

These vocabulary-learning tips would be easy for #FSL teachers to implement with typically developing students, & would be particularly useful for students with language-learning difficulties (e.g., multilingual learners, students with developmental disabilities, weak readers).
Pro tips for teaching vocabulary so your students learn, use, and retain words - without breaking a sweat! 😅 . These research-backed Vocabulary Talk Moves tell how we can use language to promote vocabulary learning. 💓. 🎙️
