It's 2 years into this mismanaged pandemic and people who are, or were, unemployed through no fault of their own are still feeling the hits, making recovery after programs ended prematurely even more difficult. https://t.co/H5OeGrZjHF

Taxes weren't collected on about 60% of all unemployment benefits issued in 2021. Recipients may owe money or get a smaller refund this tax season.

Huge day for movement to #FixUI - @USDOL announces $15 million for states to work with community navigators to bridge equity gaps in #unemployment benefits take-up. Navigators have been a fixture of #snap and #CHIP benefits

Congress has no problem collecting additional taxes from independent contractors, but not a peep about making them eligible for Unemployment Insurance. #ExtendPUA #FixUI
Instead of taxing the rich, @POTUS & Congress went after average Americans trying to hustle including: -Airbnb hosts making just $600/year (previously a $20,000 threshold). -People who sell things over Venmo/Paypal/Etsy (mostly makers & artists) Really? That's the problem?

@TCFdotorg @judithheumann @RebeccaCokley @SeeMiaRoll @AyannaPressley @rosadelauro @IndivarD @dorianwarren .@RebeccaDNELP, @pelhamprog, and @ExtendPua joined us to discuss the transformative impact of pandemic unemployment programs, which helped millions of workers pay their bills in 2020 and 2021. (And why we need to #MakeUISexyAgain so we can #FixUI!) https://t.co/T0goV67bU3 (4/)

And labor force participation rates largely stalled in 2021, never approaching pre-pandemic levels." @NelpNews

"The unemployment rate for Black workers (7.1%) remained more than twice as high as the rate for white workers (3.2%)-a result of structural racism that policy changes have not been transformative enough to uproot.

"When you account for workers who are marginally attached to the labor force and those who are employed part-time for economic reasons — a more comprehensive measure of the unemployment rate — unemployment was 7.3 percent." @Groundwork

the same politicians who say "people can't afford to miss work because of the pandemic" are also not interested in making sure those workers can afford to miss work

What was that bragging we heard about "unexpectedly low new UI claims" numbers? Guess who else can't file for UI? People who left their jobs, even if they left for safety or health reasons during a pandemic. #ExtendPUA #ExtendUI #FixUI
A record 4.5 million Americans voluntarily left their jobs in November as the US had 10.6 million jobs to fill that month

@WHCOS This is not the flex the White House is pretending it is. Millions of Americans are no longer ELIGIBLE to file for unemployment because of expired pandemic programs and maxed out weeks. Businesses are closing again & there's zero safety net for workers.

Starting a thread for stories here. How are you all? As always, after you tell us, you can use the tools on our website to tell your representatives in Congress.

They won't lock down or shut down precisely because they don't want to talk about the nothing that government would do for workers in that situation. AND YET restaurants, shows, & businesses are still having to close their doors. & there's no help for the affected workers.
if you are gonna start talking about lockdowns and shutdowns may i also suggest you start talking about what the government does for the workers and businesses that are fucked in that equation.

Unacceptable.
If you are a gig worker or otherwise out of the the state UI system, you get nothing because we did not #extendpua @ExtendPua

Yike! If you lost work and March 2020 and went back to work on July 2021, you would be ineligible for state #UI if you lost work and filed in the 4th quarter of 2021 due to Omicron closures #Unemployment
If you collected unemployment benefits earlier in the pandemic and have lost work due to Omicron, your current eligibility for UI may depend on how much you worked in between lapses. More from @GregIacurci and @pelhamprog:

We're heading into this winter Omicron wave without expanded unemployment benefits or any guarantee of paid sick leave. PPP is over. Rental assistance has stopped flowing in some states and there's no federal eviction moratorium. Basically, we're going in without a safety net.

Another caveat to the drop in Black women's unemployment: Black women's labor force participation fell between Oct and Nov, and, in fact, has been falling since August. While employment did increase, the drop in unemployment (if sustained) happened in part b/c participation fell.

Pandemic UI programs should not have ended until we had gained back ALL of the jobs lost. We are still short 3.9 MILLION jobs. #ExtendPUA #FixUI
BREAKING: The US economy added back just 210,000 jobs in November, which was well below expectations (forecast was 570k). The Unemployment Rate fell to 4.2% -- lowest since before the crisis. Overall, the US has gained back 83% of the jobs lost. 3.9 million to go.

1/3 of the "improvements" in UI numbers is people kicked off of programs, not people who are reemployed. ONE THIRD. 5.4 MILLION PEOPLE. That's not something our politicians should be grand standing about. #FixUI #ExtendPUA
@aaronsojourner Our new analysis shows that of the 18 million decline in UI claims since last year, 2/3 can be attributed to people finding new jobs, while 1/3 (approx 5.4 million) stem from people losing aid as the result of pandemic-era UI programs ending. 2/

New data out today show 3.2 million workers continued to claim #unemployment benefits at the end of October even as 7.4 million workers were unemployed.
