There is such a joy to Ffarquhar Branch.
Everyone who came to see it smiled so much, no matter their age or background.
It is something so special, and I'm so honoured to be involved with it - let alone operate it!
Who else spotted the new addition to the platform?
What do I find laying on my desk at work this morning?
This lovely picture from 1986!
The Rev Wilbert Awdry and Britt Allcroft at the Dean Forest Railway with a small display of the Television Series engine props.
What a fun find!
Hands up, who knew that Henry's Tunnel had gauntleted track when it was first built?
Gauntleting is when two lines converge, but don't connect. Meaning only one train at a time can run over it - Henry was blocking both running lines, which is why they had to dig a 2nd tunnel!
So yesterday was an amazing day.
I am now a Passed Assistant Guard! (Basically, I can now Guard trains all on my own!)
It's equal parts terrifying and exciting haha, I can't wait to start working towards being a fully fledged Guard!
Regardless of age, gender, race and background - everyone is welcome at the Talyllyn.
That's what makes the place so special and integral to the heritage movement even 70+ years on. I am biased, but let it be an example to those Railways stuck in the past.
In amongst the sad events going on, we mustn't lose sight that
#volunteering
as a whole is a joyous and rewarding experience for many, the young and not so young.
We must remember that there are heritage railways out there trying their best to be better, trying hard to change.
I'm getting such a joy from making these illustration based faces!
Two of my favourite Gordon illustrations that I just had to replicate.
I hope you're all enjoying these because I think you'll be seeing more in the next few weeks haha
Well this is fun, no other details than the picture is from 1927 and that the steam digger was used in the construction of the Sutton Bypass Road by Surrey County Council.
Obviously I think we can now see where the idea for the character and name came from!
"NARROW GAUGE RAILS IN SODOR" - the full 1972 lecture all about the Narrow Gauge by the Rev Wilbert Awdry, presented by
@MrTimDunn
& put together by myself!
Come and join us for an hour of NEVER SEEN BEFORE images and facts, 24th December at 8pm GMT
Well shit, this is basically what I went through in Year 7 too - not to the extreme of going to the gym to fit in etc, but still. All models sold.
The pressure of wanting to "fit in" is awful, especially given how much liking trains was specifically targeted in secondary school.
Yesterday I had the absolute pleasure of photographing Corris No.10 with it's freshly applied lining!
What a gorgeous sight, it has really finished off the loco nicely. Congratulations to all at the Corris Railway on a job well done!
Corris Railway No.10, the newest steam loco in the World!
What an amazing achievement - please give the video a watch to see No.10 in action!
I had the absolute pleasure of having the chance to do some photographs at the launch event too - here are some of my favourites.
Liz & Chris take a trip over the hill to the
@CorrisRailway
and take a look at the World's newest steam locomotive! (As of recording that is!)
Give our new video a watch on YouTube NOW!
71 years ago today, the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society ran it's first train - marking the beginning of the World's First Preserved Railway and the world railway preservation movement.
It is such an honour to be a volunteer at this magnificent place, it is just so special.
🏴 Rapido have announced a newly tooled range of models themed around the children's TV Classic Ivor the Engine! Find out more about this exciting new range:
Ivor the Engine Train Pack: £169.50 (DCC Sound: £259.20)
Rolling Stock Pack: £97.70
Traversing time!
Very cool to see the new traverser in action at the Corris Railway today, keep your eyes on this little line - lots of exciting things to come!
Something very special happened today.
My James was allowed to briefly stand on the Rev Awdry's own Ffarquhar layout while we were checking over the contents of the study.
I am a very happy chappy.
It's not often I photograph GWR stuff...
However this one had the words "Talyllyn Railway" on the front, so I made an exception.
GWR No.4047 "Pendennis Castle" climbing out of Bridgnorth at the Severn Valley Railway's Spring Gala, re-creating the 1965 TRPS AGM special!
Just want to give a massive thank you to
@FlyingPringle
for this wonderful commission!
Sir Charles Topham Hatt, in full RWS purple waistcoat glory!
The quality of this is top notch, I've been absolutely blown away - just some absolutely gorgeous craftsmanship.
Here's entry for the
#RailwaySeriesCollab
!
I got "Gallant Old Engine", so here's Rusty & Cora going along the line, helping to mend the storm damage!
Four brand new models of mine! These are all 16mm garden railway scale and I am so happy with how they've turned out. Still WIP!
Today is the Rev Wilbert Awdry's 110th Birthday - I have so much to thank him for. His works have proved a constant inspiration.
I was in the Awdry Study today & want to share this, his original modelling toolbox - still complete with tools, amazing to think what they've made.
Honestly what a horrible generalisation from the article and sadly, the SVR - it's not just the "Young Generation", I've witnessed so many people who would remember coaches like these in their youth bemused trying to shut a door that isn't slam lock.
Had the absolute pleasure of having the Rev W. Awdry's own Toby model stand on my layout, next to my own Toby - was brought down as a surprise for me. Couldn't be happier!
Wow, what a turn out!! Thank you all so so much for coming along to our silly little event for the 4th time!
It has been an honour to organise it with
@DanielLongEAP
.
I didn't get a chance to take any pictures, so have this one of me giving Rusty a "face massage"
#AwdryEx4
"If they've got seats - they're coaches"
Finished Ada, Jane and Mabel today! Very happy with how they've turned out - really glad I've got back into building more kits recently.
"Spite Douggie would ye?"
Yes, he would!
To say I'm proud of this model is an understatement - made in an evening on a whim! I bought the base model at lunch time, haha
The face is my own design and printed on an Anycubic Photon - great printer!
WINNER! The First Preserved Railway building a digital audience.
We're so honoured to have won the Marketing & Communications Award for our YouTube channel at the
@HRA_UK
awards!
If you pick up the latest issue of
@RailwayModeller
you might just find an article by some mug called Luke, talking about all things Awdry! (nothing new there)
Rather surreal to see something I've written published, but so very happy!
Well, we didn't win it - but this is still amazing to hold in my hands, and to know my silly little Awdry event was thought about in the preservation world
And here is my face when I turned the corner to meet the """family""" I was being a """tour guide""" for yesterday.
The first thing he does as a millionaire is gaslight me, smh people do change 😞
And with that - Here's a better look at Thomas! A printed RWS Edwards Illustration based model, wonderfully designed by
@the_chairlord
, running on a Bachmann Thomas chassis.
I did a lot of design work to get it all to fit - the running board even swaps out for a dipped version!
Welcoming NWR D3 "Bear" to my fleet! Not fully finished yet as he still needs renumbering on one side and a light weathering.
The face is my own design and print based on an mix of Peter Edwards and Edgar Hodges illustrations.
Completely standalone it's a great episode - as ever the model work, music and atmosphere are 10/10.
I, personally, am not a fan that it doesn't mention the Bluebell as a real place nor treat Stepney as a visitor to the island. I feel the same about the erasure of TR mentions-
rusty to the rescue is a fucking phenomenal episode and it's the one mixed opinion in this fandom i don't understand
like how do you watch this sequence and be like "nah bad episode"
Had a delivery today! Some 3D printed faces for these lot - Sir Handel, Peter Sam and Duncan's were designed by
@the_chairlord
and Fred's by myself. Can't thank Andrew enough for letting me get these printed.
Speaking of, big thanks to
@KnucklesSCC
for printing them!
The final steps are making sure the faces sit firm and straight on each loco... and then we're done!
It has been a steep learning curve making these, but has been such an honour and a pleasure - and seeing your reactions to them make it all so, so worth it.
Thank you very much.
I got to pose my model of Duncan next to the Rev Wilbert Awdry's own model!!!!
I think the coolest thing about this is that it's the exact same kit, just built about 40+ years apart haha.
I am also incredibly vindicated on my choice of red as its a near perfect match!
Really happy with how Henry is coming along, just need to pull my finger out and finish the lining!!
Thankfully he runs really nicely, finally managed to give him a good run at the model club.
I had a fun time doing the photoshop job for this!
Hopefully should be close enough to what it ends up looking like - some details still to be fully decided!
As announced in today's Annual General Meeting - we're happy to say that Talyllyn will return from overhaul looking ever so slightly different, in a stunning Great Eastern Railway blue livery!*
Had a really fun day yesterday, first time ever seeing the Tugs and some TV props - really intrigued by the periscope camera equipment on display! Thank you for inviting me along and for such a lovely weekend
@SodorGal
!
Finally made a Mavis! Sorted it all yesterday, using a Bachmann 04 and
@KnucklesSCC
's sideplates and cow catchers.
Just need to sort the name and company branding now.
So the original tweet is gone etc, but I would just like to take a moment to ensure everyone the lectures we have performed at the Talyllyn are Word. For. Word. what Awdry himself wrote.
We did not deviate.
We did not compromise.
Weeks were spent transcribing the notes.
... Excuse me? The whole thing's based on the writings of Awdry himself. It's HIS creation wtaf.
Luke Ryan and Tim Dunn spent a lot of time and effort into these presentations. They did their research and stayed true to the material so his lore can be faithfully represented.
I have had the most wonderful, stressful, emotional & brilliant weekend of my life.
Thank you to my friends for helping operate Ffarquhar Branch and keeping me sane. Couldn't ask for a better bunch. I love you all so much.

I just can't begin to explain how much of a wonderful, lovely person
@keiraautumn
is - they are my absolute rock and I love them so so much.
Today has been wonderful ☺️
It's amazing how this guy hasn't changed a single bit in years and still gets away with shit like this - hiding replies calling it out is pathetic, and so is this "joke".
Just jog on already.
Project Neil is a go! Been on the back burner for a while now, really do love the pre-NWR companies - so much unexplored potential for stories and modelling.
The Little known Skarloey Railway No.9 "Fred" is complete! Very proud of the weathering.
Really really enjoyed making this model and as far as I'm aware I think this may be the first OO9 Fred model? Correct me if wrong of course.
Duncan was fun.
We knew we wanted him to be grumpy, but he couldn't be seen to be angry at anyone in particular - we don't want to scare a child now, do we?
In the end, we decided on him looking up & away from the platform - he's angry at the world, not anyone in particular!
