Lest you forget. Community is not given to you. You must build community. You must contribute to community, and when others also contribute then your community will thrive. The benefits of community emerge from collective action.

The bill would “set a political precedent,” said @EnvPolicyCenter. “I don’t think it’s a good strategy to try to erode [laws] that have statewide benefit for the very narrow local benefits for the housing development process.” 📸@bethlaberge

On Day 1, 198 nations ratified the framework for making COP27's loss + damage fund operational, and the first pledges were made. The EU led with $245M, while the US pledged $17.5M or about 0.002% of its defense budget. I rate this one 🌴, and here's why: https://t.co/BsDDUQeiDf

Really interesting and important study here. Yet again, local rulemaking authority and having a formal community management authority are associated with better forest outcomes across a range of variables. Notably, tree planting is associated with somewhat worse outcomes.

How can policy promote carbon, biodiversity, and rural well-being in the world’s forests? Our recent paper in Nature Climate Change shows that one of the most powerful ways may be to give rural and indigenous people power over their management. https://t.co/Hugt26oKV4 #COP28 1/x

@psmaldino @EnvPolicyCenter I was in the seminar where Pete and Rob met and began working on what they then called dual inheritance theory. The initial foray was in substantial part a reaction to the genetic reductionism of Wilson's sociobiology.

One of the more opaque parts of a faculty job (for outsiders) is how much of it is fundraising. Grad student: $100K (stipend: $25K) Post doc: $150K (salary: $75K) Research staff: $220K (salary: $100K) For a lab with 8 GS, 2 PDs, 2 staff, need to raise *at least* $1.5M per year.

What is the Ogallala Aquifer and why is it running out of water? The water — which spans from South Dakota to Texas — at one point accounted for 30% of the crop and animal production in the U.S. https://t.co/I3uezjNzZP by @arbourtrary @drdesrochers @Magnusichi @KatieJ_Bernard

I encourage followers of @HuisingLab to watch the event and draw their own conclusions. For someone who claims to care about climate change, it's odd to heckle and disrupt an event where the entire panel has devoted their careers to trying to solve it.

In another paper that I think will appear soon, other members of my group show that individual location in this ideological space, is correlated with networks. Super cool.

I like this one because it shows that while many SLR interested parties share some common preferences, there are emergent cleavages between environmental and community-based groups with respect to their policy preferences. https://t.co/Zzu2iGypNN

Just reviewing one of the recent papers with @FPVantaggiato and I really like this figure, showing 5 layers of network communities with different functions for sea level rise adaptation. Leader span across these communities. https://t.co/raBx63MRv4
