It's an astounding record, this. Just when you think all the possible melodies might have been used up, and you fear we're pretty much out of chord sequences, he comes along with at least four or five of each in every song. Funny as ever but so powerful and moving too. What a guy.

The Prodigy are just one of the indisputably great British bands. Immense amount of artistry and stagecraft in their pulverising Glastonbury set. They're nuking the place.

Really enjoying how this year's Glastonbury is simultaneously a vile hotbed of far-left extremism, a bourgeois glorified holiday camp, a rich kids' playground and a swamp of crusty benefits scroungers, depending on which click-hungry contrarian or tired reactionary you read.

Also, a week ago today full-on Bowie disciple Yungblud was running his own massive all-day festival.

Bowie was a big cheerleader for TVOTR in their early days and did this song with them.

Not that we need evidence of Bowie's enduring influence but TV On The Radio, Pulp and Gary Numan are all currently performing at the same time at Glastonbury.

You can see it in sport (esp cricket), churches, the media, museums, theatre, all over the place. Too many institutions are in thrall to the attention economy, and it's not good for anyone.

This is about the ONS but the basic issue - prioritising novelty and 'relevance' over doing the basics well - afflicts so many parts of modern Britain

It's easy to mock the way Americans write about football but I think we should anyway .

The doctrine the Trinity confounds idolatry and keeps us from making God in our own image. It reminds us of the limits of human rationality. As a species, we don't know everything and we can't know everything. We need to be reminded of that every day.
