The biggest change to English teaching I want to see is the removal of named rhetorical devices. Very few students can correctly identity or explain anaphora; even worse, epizeuxis. Why do they need it? Just teach ā€˜repetition’. I promise it’s enough. Where did this even start?

This is pretty good on how to build trust. One aspect I think is missed here is the obligation we have to building expertise. We only trust those who are sufficiently competent & knowledgeable.

4 key conclusions. 1 skills-based curriculums don't work 2 phonics works for early reading 3 progression statements are skills-based assessment & they don't work either 4 knowledge isn't right wing - left wing govts everywhere are turning towards it because it works!

I really miss the part at the front of library books where you could see the due dates of previous borrowers, there was something fun in knowing how long ago a book was last read. We should bring those back.

@bphillipsonMP If you care about teachers’ workload, retention & wellbeing it might be better to go gently in reforming the curriculum. Most schools have put tons of work into this over the last few years

I’m just going to share again this blog I wrote last year. We find ourselves again in the midst of mock marking and I really think the focus is on the wrong things - the grade isn’t the important bit, the patterns and the feedback are. #edublogshare

Mock exam season is upon us. With it comes the dread of piles of marking, tight deadlines, and students pestering you for grades (I can already hear the ā€œhave you marked our mocks yetā€ reverberatin…
