@GovKathyHochul's proposed FY25 budget failed to prioritize life-saving health interventions for people who use drugs & instead, proposed criminalizing more substances. How did the @NYSenate & @NYSA_Majority respond in their one-house budgets (or counter-proposals)? 🧵

Sam Rivera (@_OnPointNYC) named the success of NYC’s overdose prevention centers (OPCs) as an extension and a direct result of the harm reduction strategies cultivated by Black, Latine, and Indigenous communities throughout history.

.@GovKathyHochul's proposed budget seeks to schedule (i.e. criminalize) more substances, despite that data shows this will increase overdose deaths and other harms to New Yorkers. Yesterday, @mstonij of @DPA_NY testified before the NYS legislature to explain why.🧵

I’m 💯 👍 for Overdose Prevention Centers run by @cornerproject in my district & @NYHarmReduction: safe sites for ppl already using drugs to do so w supervision. It’s personal—I lost a sister to heroin. OPCs reduce syringe litter, move ppl toward treatment, & save lives. Humane!

A critical step toward supporting the health, safety and dignity of people who use drugs. Eager to see how this step changes what we think is possible in other spaces, as we still have so much work to do.
