Les volumens sont l'ancêtre des livres, sur rouleau de papyrus. Celui de Menandre (fondation Bodmer), date du III e siècle ap JC en Egypte, présente des pièces de théâtre grec de Menandre (IVe/IIIe siècle avJC). Il était transportés dans des "capsae" en métal ou en cuir . ⤵️
Un très bel étui à volumen en alliage cuivreux conservé au musée Lugdunum de Lyon, datant du IIe ou IIIe siècle et retrouvé rue des Farges.
