Drawing inspiration from previous debates on the conceptualisation of resource exchange in AM symbioses, we also ask whether biological markets models could be expanded to include longer-term cost–benefit implications as well as other parameters such as ‘C-for-defence’?.

Reviewing the literature, we found increased evidence for the disruption of C-for-nutrient exchange between plants and their AM symbionts as experimental systems increased in complexity and ecological relevance.
