This was the first project I started in grad school—parts of it were fodder for my first conference presentations, qualifying exam, and then left to mature through an unexpected pandemic. I learned a lot, and wrapping it up after all that feels good 😌

We also model expected sediment 🪨 and CH4 apparent 🐄💨temperatures with depth to show that between sediment 🪨temperatures of ~100-150°C (upper limit of microbial exchange until efficient abiotic exchange) we may expect to see clumped isotopologue🐄💨 disequilibrium 🌀

The re-equilibration is likely microbially catalyzed 🦠, although this apparent 🐄💨 temperature is ~20°C higher than the putative upper-temperature limit of microbial methanogenesis in marine sediments. ⬆️🌡

Δ13CH3D values of CH4 do not follow conservative two-component mixing between shallow microbial🦠 and deep thermogenic🥵 CH4. Rather, CH4 isotopologues indicate reequilibration along geothermal gradients following burial, which continues up to apparent 🐄💨temperatures of ~100°C!

We look at vertical profiles of clumped methane isotopologues from the GOM and Black Sea that span the transition between microbial 🦠 and thermal🥵 methanogenic zones. These provide a means to trace the upper-T🌡 limits of microbial activity in hydrocarbon-rich marine sediments.

We made a short, cute, animated film for @sciam about subsurface microbes and what they can do for us! This is from work with @pbarry10 @DavidTerryFine @MaartendeMoor @d_giovannelli and others! It's dubbed in Spanish too!
Wherever we dig and however deep we dig we find microscopic living organisms. Could the mysterious microbes in earth’s crust unlock a climate change solution? 🥼 @archaearama @pbarry10 🎞️ Voyager 🎥 David Terry Fine 🔗 https://t.co/gGTzhoUNPe

There is so much I like about this commentary—worth the read!
Here is a piece @BalaChaudhary, Rohini Shivamoggi, and I wrote in response to the article published today, "Systemic racial disparities in funding rates at the NSF" – from the perspective of three Asian American women scientists. (1/3) 🧵 https://t.co/dbAhtB6Pju

In the article published today, “Systemic racial disparities in funding rates at the NSF,” the authors examined public data on >1 million NSF proposals in the past ~20 yrs and found persistent & significant racial disparities in funding rates. /🧵
