I agree. Economic modeling is better than haphazard decisions. However, since they purport to be objective, they should strive to account for factors that can create disparities and explain their assumptions fully, so consumers of them can assess objectivity. #ethicschat

@JournalofEthics Healthcare resources are limited. Prioritization and rationing are inevitable. Economic modeling allows us to consider opportunity cost. @ddkim62 @Basucally #EthicsChat

A huge research gap IMO. These biases can exist at nearly at phase of analysis, including strategies being evaluated, sources of evidence to inform model inputs, choice of outputs and objectives, distribution of health and cost outcomes. Relatively new methods are being developed

Time flies when you are having fun! We are already halfway through today's chat. Here's our fifth question: What are best practices for making sure economic decision modeling mitigates sources of racial and ethnic bias and motivates health equity? #EthicsChat

As stated in @ElinaPliakos' "From the Editor" article, little attention has been given to ethical and social dimensions of using economic decision models and analyses in health care:

Intervention investment decisions are fraught with complexity and uncertainty, so models are used to synthesize evidence from multiple sources to help inform organizational and practice decisions.

A letter from the issue editor: @elinapliakos considers how economic modeling can motivate good decision making by improving health systems performance, clinical practice, and patientsโ€™ health care experiences:

The August 2021 issue of the #AMA Journal of Ethics โ€“ Economic Decision Modeling in Health Care- is now live! Health care system operations, patientsโ€™ behaviors, and cliniciansโ€™ behaviors are extremely complex and hard to accurately predict:

I haven't seen any questions yet saying "Mr. Jones' HbA1c is 9%, a noticeable increase from last visit. You ask him about medication adherence and through tears he says 'I cant afford my insulin anymore.'" Would really like to know what I'm expected to do in this situation.
