My latest in @timeshighered. Thank to all the academic mothers who spoke to me for this piece. You’re all heroes…but shouldn’t have to be.
Opinion: Instead of valorising academic mothers we need to develop structures that allow everyone to flourish, both academically and as parents, says @EleanorPalser.

For those that missed it, I recently talked about whether you need a Mentor… or a Sponsor. In @timeshighered.
Is mentoring the elixir of academic life? The value of senior faculty advising their juniors is increasingly emphasised. But is guidance fairly shared? @mroth78, @ProfSrilaRoy, @MerlinCrossley, @DrAliceKelly, @EleanorPalser and two other scholars weigh in.

We need a clear, data-driven definition of what it means to be a first-generation college student. In addition to what’s covered here, I rarely see parents with distance or adult learning included.
Across higher ed, there's no common consensus on who is a first-gen student . @CommonApp dug into student applicant data to understand how various definitions of "first-generation student" impact student profiles .
