2 studies below…but… Some qualities influence performance in an indirect way because they act as enablers rather than primary drivers. A variable can matter a great deal even if it does not show a clean linear relationship with the final outcome. Here is why that happens.

Posts like these are a perfect example of a hasty generalization. A single case of a gifted pitcher who never benched gets turned into a global claim about what baseball players should never do. Bench press is a tool. It can help many athletes develop qualities that transfer

What we know from the last several years of research is that training in lengthened positions transfers those adaptations to the shortened position. But it doesn’t transfer well all the other way around. Train accordingly.

Over the last year or so it dawned upon me how 90% of cuff training takes place in the maximally shortened position for each tissue. Yet when we throw, the greatest rate of loading on the anterior and posterior cuff occurs near the maximally lengthened position of those tissues.

Embarrassing programming for a rehab throwing program for a high level pitcher. Just embarrassing. Long toss capped at 120’ (paging @jaegersports), timed throwing, 55 pitch (55!) bullpens. Why are we allowing this as an industry just because it’s the way it’s been done?

If you want to get back to peak performance after a major surgery, doing the basics will only take you so far. A high output tasks requires tissue capable of producing and withstanding those high outputs.

Objectivity is the name of the game. In the RTT we objectified the intensity with velocity ranges. But there were hiccups along the way. Using tools like @FlexProGrip we were able to objectify deficiencies causing trouble at higher velos leading up to the return to competition.

ACL injuries happen in pitchers too. The problem? There’s no clear protocol on when and how to return them to the mound. Here’s what I look at when helping pitchers return to the mound after ACL surgery Which knee? - Block leg: must tolerate rapid decel forces without leaking

“The Standard Is The Standard.” One of our UCL-repair athletes walked in sporting that line on a high-school tee, perfectly capturing our rehab mission: get back to throwing not merely pain-free, but stronger, more powerful, and more durable than the day the ligament tore.
