Two new contributions from us: @MeganRTeh on the wild metabolism of CD8 T-cells in iron deficiency and why they love aspartate; and the current landscape of the strong influence of iron on immunity in general, with @JoeNFrost.

Wonderful to see this out, a big effort led by @AE_Preston and fun for the lab to do something new (and very very old)

Glad you enjoyed it @boronfan and great to have a botany guy in the house!.
I am struggling to summarise what was the best bit of #WIMMDay2024. As a plant-microbiologist now turned human nutritionist in @Drakesmith_Lab @MRC_WIMM, today I got:.

Aw thank you @Susannajd - I suspect many folks have been very afraid. .
Everything you ever wanted to know about why cells need iron but were afraid to ask - beautiful review by @MeganRTeh @Drakesmith_Lab @AEArmitage1.

Iron deficiency is highly prevalent worldwide but how it manifests at molecular/cellular levels is poorly understood. The brainchild of @MeganRTeh our new review is a compendium of why cells need iron and what happens when there isn’t enough!

A long time ago my first and formative research experience was with @HironoriFunabi1 in Kyoto. He was absolutely marvellous then and he still is today, in a London pub. And now he likes iron, a bit. Thank you Hiro!

A bit of what we’re up to….
For this year's #DayofImmunology, we spoke to 3 of our scientists, @Drakesmith_Lab, Agne Antanaviciute & Jan Rehwinkel, to get a snapshot of some of the fantastic immunology research taking place in our Unit at the @MRC_WIMM . Watch the full video here:

Delighted to help out on this in-depth analysis of early drivers of Long-Covid, heroically led by @DrAimeeLee Iron is needed for so many biological activities, when it’s in the wrong place it can cause big problems- phenomenon may not be limited to SARS-CoV-2.
Ironing out long-COVID. the result of a mammoth, years-long collaborative effort between @Cambridge_Uni and @Drakesmith_Lab investigating the link between iron dysregulation during COVID-19 and long-COVID is out today in @NatImmunol Check it out!.

Fully agree! Deeper understanding of causes and consequences, and multiple approaches to combatting anaemia are needed.
